Sports from Wayne Mausser

Kyrie Irving had 26 points and 11 assists, Al Horford added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Boston Celtics cruised past the Milwaukee Bucks 120-90 on Sunday in the opener of their second-round playoff series.

Jaylen Brown chipped in with 19 points and Gordon Hayward had 13 off the bench for the Celtics. Boston controlled the game for long stretches and played stingy defense against MVP candidate Giannis Antetokoumpo, who scored 22 points but shot just 7 for 21. Antetokounmpo didn’t make his first field goal until the first minute of the second quarter.

Game 2 is Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Khris Middleton had 16 for Milwaukee, which completed a four-game sweep of the Detroit Pistons on Monday and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001. The Celtics came off a sweep of their own against Indiana.

The Celtics knocked Milwaukee out of the playoffs in seven games last year, winning the final game at home. This year, Milwaukee is the top seed in the East and has home-court advantage throughout the postseason after posting the NBA’s best record, but Boston didn’t play like an underdog in any way.

The Celtics jumped out early, leading by as many as 11 in the opening quarter. Boston shot 52% while the Bucks shot only 5 of 19.

The shooting woes continued for the Bucks until midway through the second quarter, when Milwaukee used a 15-0 run to pull even at 40. The teams then traded baskets with the Celtics grabbing a 52-50 lead at the half.

Boston used a 9-0 run in the third quarter to again build a double-digit lead, which grew to as much as 21 as Milwaukee again failed to make shots.

Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich and Mets star Robinson Canó were both pulled with injuries while New York beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 Sunday on J.D. Davis’ tiebreaking, pinch-hit single in the seventh inning.

Yelich left in the fifth with low back discomfort, and it was unclear when he was injured. He singled and was retired on Jesús Aguilar’s groundball double play in the fourth. Yelich dealt with back issues last season.

Canó exited in the first after being hit by a pitch on his left hand while failing to check his swing. X-rays taken during the game were negative, and New York will send him for further testing Monday.

Davis put New York ahead 3-2 with a line drive against reliever Alex Claudio. Amed Rosario scored from second after reaching when Yelich’s replacement, Ben Gamel, dropped his flyball in right field with Jacob Barnes (1-1) pitching.

Tomás Nido, recalled from Triple-A on Sunday when catcher Travis d’Arnaud was cut, added a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth.

Seth Lugo struck out the side in the eighth, and Edwin Díaz pitched the ninth for his eighth save in eight chances. New York ended a three-game skid.

Yelich is batting .353 with a major league-leading 14 homers, tied with Albert Pujols (2006) and Alex Rodríguez (2007) for most in the first full month of a season. He’s on pace for 78 homers and 190 RBIs.

Canó was ruled to have swung at the pitch that ended his day by plate umpire Todd Tichenor. It’s the second time this season Canó has been struck by a pitch but called for a swinging strike.

The left-handed hitter turned toward first base while Gonzalez’s fastball barreled at his chest. It connected with the outside of Canó’s left hand, and Canó staggered out of the box and slammed his helmet before leaving.

Milwaukee slugger Mike Moustakas hit a tying two-run homer off Steven Matz (3-1) in the seventh. Matz had been excellent until then, pitching most of the game with a 2-0 lead. He finished with seven innings of two-run ball, striking out four without a walk.

Brewers left-hander Gio Gonzalez was hit hard early in his season debut but steadied himself to throw five innings of two-run ball. He signed a $2 million, one-year deal Saturday after opting out of his minor league contract with the Yankees.

Milwaukee opens a 10-game homestand with the first of four against Colorado on Monday. RHP Zach Davies (2-0, 1.65) is scheduled to pitch for the Brewers against Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland, who’s 2-3. First pitch from Miller Park is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Sunday, the Cardinals beat the Reds 5-2, the Cubs nipped Arizona 6-5 and the Dodgers slipped past Pittsburgh 7-6.

The Green Bay Packers started Saturday with four picks in day three of the NFL Draft.

The Packers went back to the defensive side of the ball with their first pick of Day 3 of the NFL draft, adding Texas A&M lineman Kingsley Keke on Saturday’s fifth round. The 6-foot-2, 288-pound Keke, a three-year starter on the Aggies’ defensive line, was the No. 150 overall pick. He had seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss and 51 total tackles last season while starting all 13 games his senior year at defensive end. Keke was the second consecutive Texas A&M player the Packers drafted. They took tight end Jace Sternberger with their third-round pick Friday.

Green Bay did not have a fourth-round pick after sending both their selections in that round to the Seattle Seahawks to move up in the first round on Thursday, when they took Maryland safety Darnell Savage.

The Packers picked Toledo CB Ka’dar Hollman with the 185th pick in the sixth round. Hollman visited the Packers for a pre-draft visit according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein. Hollman is 5-foot-11, 196 pounds and ran a 4.39 forty yard dash. He had 112 tackles, 27 pass breakups and two interceptions for the Rockets. Hollman received no offers out of high school to play football and chose to walk-on at Toledo. Then he earned a scholarship and a degree.

The Packers selected running back Dexter Williams from Notre Dame in the sixth round, pick no. 194.

Williams finally became Notre Dame’s top rusher in his senior season, though he only played in nine games (eight starts) due to a suspension for undisclosed reasons that cost him the first month of the season. He rushed for 995 yards and 12 scores on 158 carries (6.3 per) while also catching 16 passes out of the backfield for 133 yards (8.3 average) and a touchdown. William’s mother, Cheryl, received the diagnosis of her second terminal illness in the spring of 2018 according to the South Ben Tribune.

With the Packers final pick in the 2019 NFL Draft the team picked inside linebacker Ty Summers from TCU.
