Dan Zimmerman Running For Ripon School Board

28 March 2019 News

After a couple years off the Ripon School Board Dan Zimmerman would like to be returned to it. He left it in 2017 when he was appointed the state’s Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary. Zimmerman moved to Ripon in 2003 when he was assigned by the U.S. Army to run Ripon College’s ROTC program. He retired from the Army in 2008 after 25 years in it. He is married with four kids that went through the Ripon Area School District. One of the things he dealt with as Secretary of Veteran Affairs was veteran suicides coupled with a mental health component. He recognizes mental health is also something school districts have to deal with. “This is a societal issue it is not just a school issue, but societal issues manifest themselves in schools. Schools are a microcosm of society, so we have to address it and we have to do some better understanding of what the issue is.” Zimmerman says he would have to be on the board to see if it would be fiscally responsible for the district to self insure for health insurance. He’s excited about the possibility of a play-based education at Barlow Park Elementary School, but says they need to take a more measured approach to a charter school. Zimmerman is one of four candidates vying for three seats on the school board.
