Flooding Leads To Evacuation Of Ripon Senior Living Facility

Rains and winter run-off led to flooding on Pleasant Street in Ripon and the evacuation of a nearby senior living complex. Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says his crews went through there about 4 am Thursday morning and things were fine, but just two hours later it was a different story. The basement area of the Kenwood Commons apartment complex had 5 to 6 feet of water in the underground parking area, which also knocked out power to the building. Because the water level on the street was too high for personal vehicles to drive through Police worked with management staff, the Ripon Area Fire District, and Diverse Options and their buses to get the residents out of the building and transported to the Ripon Senior Center. “We were able to use fire trucks to remove and assist those tenants into the fire trucks that were high enough to then transport from the complex down the street to an area that was dry where we could then get them into buses.” At the Senior Center the American Red Cross worked with those tenants to find places for them or connect them with family members until the complex is safe to return to. Chief Wallner says it could be some time before that happens.
