Cover Crop Program Wednesday In FDL

Natural Resource Conservation Service defines soil “as a living, life-giving natural resource. As world population and food production demands rise, keeping our soil healthy and productive is of paramount importance.” By farming using soil health best management practices and systems, we can improve soil health and increase productivity and profitability while protecting our water resources.
The newly formed Fond du Lac County Farmers Soil Health Group will be hosting “Cover Crops, Carbon & Conservation: A Session on Soil Health” to provide resources on managing soil health. The meeting is set for Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at UW-Extension Fond du Lac County, 400 University Drive, Fond du Lac, WI. The seminar will be held 10 am to 4 pm.
Featured speakers includes Keith Berns, Farmer & Co-Owner of Green Cover Seed in Nebraska, discussing Carbonomics-The Amazing Economy of Soil and Erin Silva, UW-Madison Organic & Sustainable Cropping Systems Specialist on Using Cover Crops to Manage Weeds and Build Soil Health. An industry update on cover crop trends and methodology will be provided by Bryan Decker and Scott Wohlman, LaCrosse Seed. A farmer panel will finish out the day consisting of local producers on their experiences and challenges Inter-Seeding, Planting Green and other Cover Crop Techniques in Cash Grain Dairy Operations.
The registration fee is $10 per person and includes meals, breaks, and materials for the meeting. Farmers, grower, managers, employees, industry professionals, and others interested in soil health are encouraged to attend. Financial support has been graciously provided by Lake Winnebago Quality Improvement Assocation, Compeer Financial, Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, Country Visions Cooperative, and Waupun Equipment Co, Inc. In-kind support has been provided by Fond du Lac County Land & Water Conservation Department and UW-Extension Fond du Lac County.
