The U-W Green Bay Phoenix men beat Oakland 66-54 Thursday night to improve to 7-6 in Horizon League play and step up to 4th place in the conference standings.  The Phoenix forced 27 turnovers.

WIAA DIVISION 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

MADISON – Sam Ryf became the first individual state swimming champion for Berlin/Green Lake since 2010 at the WIAA Division 2 state swimming and diving meet Friday when he swam his way to a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

The most recent champion for Berlin/Green Lake was Greg Hameister in the 50-yard freestyle.

Ryf won the event with a time of 50.13 seconds, beating Nolan Francis of Rhinelander by 0.75 seconds.

Ryf established his lead in the first half of the race, taking a 0.79-second lead after one lap.

That wasn’t Ryf’s only trip to the medal stand Friday. He took third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.97.

Other top finishers in the top six included Brillion/Valders/Chilton’s Parker Sonnabend in the 200-yard IM, who finished third with a time of 1:56.64, and Joe Steffel of Ashwaubenon who finished sixth with a time of 2:00.24.

Sonnabend added a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of :59.06.

Brock Aune of Sturgeon Bay/Southern Door/Sevastopol took second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of :57.60. Additionally, he took third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of :21.96, 0.06 seconds out of first.

Pulaski’s Ben Bouchard made the medal stand by finishing sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :49.43.

In the relay events, Kiel/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah made two trips to the medal stand. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Christopher Muhs, Mason Steffen, Ashton Arnold and Charlie Tanouye finished fourth with a time of 1:30.00. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the same foursome took fifth with a time of 3:19.77.

The Brillion/Valders/Chilton relay team of Bo Geiger, Sonnabend, Isaac Koehler and David Suttner finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.17.

Edgewood, with its point total of 289, easily won the team title for the second time in school history, with the first title coming in 2014.
