Barlow Park Safety Issue Discussed

13 February 2019 News

The Ripon Common Council has decided to take Ripon Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock’s advice and barricade the loop in Barlow Park during snow events to prevent vehicles from dropping off kids for Barlow Park Elementary School. The Council discussed it at some length last night. Mayor Gary Will said that entrance is not a road or street and wasn’t meant for vehicle traffic. With kids walking and bicycling to the school, vehicle traffic dropping off children has made it unsafe for them. The barricades will be up for snow event during the winter, but the city and school district have already explored options for dealing with the problem. It was noted that the school district prefers children to use Newbury or Metomen Street sidewalks to get to the school. Council members were concerned about shutting off access to all vehicles entirely because it is a park, but felt telling some vehicles couldn’t access it while others could would be a double standard.
