FDL Police Custody Death Update
9 February 2019 News
Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney says a Fond du Lac man who died while in Fond du Lac Police custody died of “acute cocaine toxicity.” Toney and Sheboygan Police held a press conference Friday releasing the findings of an investigation into the December 23rd death of Christopher Carey. Tests showed he had twice as much cocaine in his system compared to what’s seen in the average cocaine overdose victim. Toney says during a traffic stop Carey swallowed cocaine in an effort to avoid being caught with it. He started to go into medical distress when he was placed in the back of a squad car. He died later at St Agnes Hospital. Police found $626 in his car and torn plastic sandwich bags with white residue that tested positive for cocaine. Officers at the scene rendered aid and called for an ambulance. Toney says there’s nothing medically different they could have done.
