Khat Something Police Do Not Usually See In The Area
Ripon Police Sergeant Lindsey Michels says the narcotic Khat has been illegal in the United States since 1993, but they ran into it for the first time in Ripon when they seized 40 pounds of its last November. It’s a plant grown in northern African countries and its effects are similar to other more popular drugs here. “It has effects that are similar to stimulants, which would be similar to cocaine or methamphetamine causing different types of behavior such as manic, delusions, paranoia and hyperactivity.” Michels says the two packages they seized last November 30th consisted of dried material. The street value of those packages was from $10,000 to $15,000.
Grothman Bill Would Put An End To Federal Government Shutdowns
Congressman Glenn Grothman is hoping federal lawmakers can avoid Friday’s deadline which would shutdown the government again. To that end he recently introduced a bill that would continue to fund the government until a budget is approved. It’s similar to what Wisconsin has been doing on the state level for nearly 70 years. It would essentially put an end to Federal Government shutdowns. “Wisconsin has had a bill well in effect since 1953 that if the state legislature does not pass a budget by July 1st when the new fiscal year starts the government just keeps operating on last year’s budget.” He doesn’t believe a budget will be passed by this week’s deadline because he says Democrats refuse to approve funding for a border wall and President Trump is tired of signing budgets with heavy spending increases.
Sturgeon Spearing Economic Impact
The DNR’s Sturgeon Biologist for the Lake Winnebago System would like to see an update of the previous study on the economic impact of the season on the area. Ryan Koenigs says a study done by the UW-Oshkosh in the early 2000’s put the impact of a 16 day season at $3.5 million, He believes today that impact would be much more. “I grew up around the Winnebago System and I was pretty young in the early 90’s when that was done, but I can tell you first hand that the sport has really grown by leaps and bounds in popularity.” Koenigs says other events like Fond du Lac’s Sturgeon Spectacular have popped up that feed off the popularity of sturgeon spearing. The sturgeon spearing season kicked off this past Saturday.
Waupun Check Presentation
Focus on Energy will join Alliant Energy and Waupun Utilities today to present a ceremonial check for nearly $90,000 to the Waupun Area School District. The money is a rebate to help offset the costs of energy efficiency upgrades to light, heating and cooling at school buildings across the district. The check presentation will be at the Junior/Senior High School. District Administrator Steve Hill other district officials will be there to accept the check. The energy upgrades at the schools will save the district an estimated $78,000 a year in energy costs.
Applicants Sought For Green Lake County Coroner
Governor Tony Evers is seeking applicants for appointment as Coroner in Green Lake County. The appointment will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Amanda Thoma. The new coroner will complete a term ending January 2nd, 2023. Those interested in applying can do that online. When you get to is website click on “Apply” and look for the link that says, “Click here to apply for Register of Deeds, Coroner or Sheriff positions.” Application materials must be received by Friday, February 22nd. There is also the option to send a cover letter and resume to govappointments@wisconsin.gov.
Lemonade Day Registration Underway
Student registration for the Fond du Lac Area’s Lemonade Day in now open. In its fifth year locally, Lemonade Day teaches students in grades 4-6 how to start, own and operate their own business through the tool of a lemonade stand. Registration is until March 30th and can be done online or at the Envision Greater Fond du Lac offices at 23 South Main Street in Fond du Lac. the program is free for students. Lemonade Day will be held on Saturday, May 4th.
Sale Today Benefits FDL Area United Way
A Collective Goods sale will be held on the first floor lobby of the Fond du Lac City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac that will benefit the Fond du Lac Area United Way. The sale is from 10 am to 2 pm. Books, electronics, home goods, kids’ gifts and more will be featured during the sale. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. The Fond du Lac County Employees United Way Committee is sponsoring the sale.
