Ripon Business Owner Had Role In Narcotics Seizure

8 February 2019 News

An official with the Ripon Police Department says they wouldn’t have been able to seize 40 pounds of narcotics last November without the help of an alert business owner. The drug Khat was being shipped in packages to a business in Ripon where it was being relabeled and sent to the area of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sergeant Lindsey Michels says they worked in cooperation with the DEA and state’s DCI to develop information about the packages, which a business owner suspected were suspicious. “There is a lot to be said for that business owner to reach out to us and say this doesn’t seem right so we just want to make sure our citizens are aware of that and know that these types of things happen.” Packages were being shipped to the Ripon business through an online postal service. They originated in Ethiopia and were sent through Israel before being sent on to Ripon. Khat is a stimulant that produces a high similar to cocaine or methamphetamine. It has been illegal in the U.S. since 1993. A suspect was arrested, but isn’t from Ripon or the state of Wisconsin. The two packages intercepted in Ripon had a street value of from $10,000 to $15,000.
