Sex Offender Placement Law

State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac and State Representative Michael Schraa of Oshkosh joined other legislators this past week in circulating legislation that would update state law regarding the placement of violent sex offenders. In particular it clarifies the law and would require that judges place those offenders without a supervised release plan in their home counties. Feyen says rural communities have been burdened because of the misinterpretation of the law. Fond du Lac County has seen a few battles over the practice in particular with a residence on Nitschke Road in the Town of Eldorado.

Grothman Creates Wall Crowd Funding

Congressman Glenn Grothman recently introduced legislation to crowd fund a wall along the U.S-Mexico border. He says it’s not going to totally fund the $5 billion plus wall, but his legislation will give people a way to safely donate by creating an account in the Treasury Department. “There are online accounts to try and fund the wall, but we want to have a formal trust there. When people contribute to wall they get their tax deduction and they know that it’s going to go the wall because I’m a little bit afraid that even when President Trump is done there will not be enough to build the walls.” Grothman says the more than $19 million that’s been given to people who have set up online funding demonstrates there is interest in public giving towards building the wall.

Wisconsin Quit Line

The tobacco control coordinator for the 5 Counties for Tobacco Free Living says if you’re giving up smoking as a New Year’s resolution a good place to start is with the Wisconsin Quit Line. Sandy Bernier works for the Fond du Lac County Health Department. “Anyone can call the Wisconsin Quit Line and they are available 24/7 and they can talk to a counselor there that can walk them through if they tried to quit before, what’s worked what hasn’t worked.” She  says the Quit Line will offer a free two week supply of nicotine therapy replacement products like the gum, the patch or the lozenges. The Wisconsin Quit Line can be called at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669. The five counties in the 5 Counties for Tobacco Free Living are Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Waushara, Marquette and Washington counties.
