Ripon Common Council Approves Salt Storage Shed Low Bid

The Ripon Common Council this week approved a low bid for a municipal salt storage shed with a lean-to option. Modern Pole Builders, Inc. had the lowest of four bids that were received. Their bid was just under $129,000 with the lean-to option of $11,390. The other three bids were considerably higher than the $160,000 the city had budgeted for the project. Public Works Director Mike Ehrenberg told the council the project will come in close to $160,000 by the time it is finished.

Radon Testing Kits Available At Discounted Price

The Fond du Lac County Health Department is currently offering Radon testing kits at a discounted price. January is National Radon Action Month. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says 1 in 10 homes in Wisconsin have high levels of Radon. “And unfortunately Radon is invisible, it’s odorless, it’s a tasteless gas. What it does it enters your home through cracks in the foundation, openings in joints or pipes or dirty floors.” If your home has a high level of Radon in it it can be mitigated, but Mueller says it has to start with testing. She says through this month the kits are available through the health department for $5. Kits are available at the Ripon City Hall weekdays from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

FDL County Board Meeting Canceled

The Fond du Lac County Board meeting scheduled for next Tuesday has been canceled due to insufficient business to stage a meeting. Eighteen of the county’s 25 supervisors signed a petition to cancel the meeting. The next regular meeting of the County Board is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12th at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac at 6 pm.

Shopko Preparing For Bankruptcy

ShopKo is expected to file for bankruptcy and that could happen next week. The news was leaked by a lawyer for a pharmaceutical company that Shopko owes money to. That lawyer said the filing for bankruptcy could occur Tuesday. Last month Bloomberg reported ShopKo was making preparations to file bankruptcy. The Green Bay based company owns 333 different types of stores and recently sold 42 of its pharmacies, including 25 in Wisconsin, to Kroger. Shopko has locations in Appleton, Fond du Lac, Menasha, Neenah, Oshkosh, Waupaca, Wautoma and elsewhere in the state.

Grand Opening Sunday For Christian Home And Rehabilitation Center In Waupun

The Christian Home and Rehabilitation Center in Waupun is moving into a new home next week. A grand opening celebration will be held for the $22.4 million facility this Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm. The 104,000 square foot facility is located at 452 Fox Lake Road. Overflow parking for the grand opening will be available with shuttle services from the Central Wisconsin Christian School. The new facility has features for skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care services.

Four Running For Ripon School Board

The Ripon Area School District will have a race for the three seats up for election on the school board. Incumbent Gary Rodman opted to run for another term, but incumbents David Scott and David Olson did not. Others running for the board include Margaret “Betsy” Heffernan, Nate Zindars and Daniel Zimmerman. Zimmerman served five years on the board, but resigned to become the state’s Veterans Affairs Secretary a post he no longer holds with a change in the Governor’s administration.

Falls Class Offered At Markesan Resident Home

The Markesan Resident Home is partnering with the Aging and Disabilities Resource Center of Adams, Green Lake, and Waushara counties to offer a fall preventionor Stepping On class. Amanda Kutcher is the Health Care Promotions Coordinator for the ADRC. She says they have lined up a pharmacist, law enforcement officer, physical therapist, and optometrist who can all offer some perspective on falls prevention. “We have pharmacist that comes in to talk about different medications that people are taking. Common medications like high blood pressure, a lot of people are on high blood pressure and how that can actually cause falls because of the side effects.” The class will be offered every Wednesday for seven weeks starting January 23rd at the Markesan Resident Home from 9:30 to 11:30 those mornings.
