Drivers Urged To Drive Sober Tonight
Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says Wisconsin is unique in that a first offense for drunken driving is an ordinance violation. “Actually Wisconsin is the only state in the Union in which a first offense drunk driving is not a crime it’s still an ordinance violation. The penalties are pretty severe its about between a $700 and $800 fine and loss of driving privileges.” Wallner says they would rather not have people involved in that first offense. He’s encouraging residents to plan ahead if they are heading out tonight, by arranging a safe ride home through a designated driver, taxi or safe ride program. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the state including the City of Ripon and Town of Ripon Police Departments are participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that runs through January 1st.
Ripon Channel Committed To Providing High Quality Broadcasts
The City of Ripon has made the most of the money they receive from the franchise fee that is included Charter Communications bills. Ripon Channel Coordinator Riley Icenogle says there have been improvements over the last few years that should allow you to see quality high definition video of Common Council meetings, sporting and community events on Spectrum access channels 986 and 987. “We’ve added new HD switching equipment in the studio and this year we installed a new HD broadcast server, which for an access channel like ours is quite a big step. ” Icenogle says they have made continuous improvements since he joined the Ripon Channel in 2001 and be good stewards of the taxpayers money. The Ripon Channel’s studio is located in Room 101 of the Ripon City Hall. In addition to the access channels they also are on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Three New FDL County Sheriff’s Deputies To Be Trained
Training will begin for three new Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies early in the New Year who will be assigned to the Patrol Division. Chief Deputy Ryan Waldschmidt says those deputies will replace the three senior deputies they will use for building and courtroom security at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac. The training for the new deputies will take the better part of four months. “Their training program, which is about 14, 15 weeks usually it takes to get through the training. At that time the county will be prepared or close to prepared to activating that security checkpoint and securing the building.” Waldschmidt says it is all about avoiding shorting the Patrol Division three deputies while providing security for the new checkpoint on the north end of the building. The checkpoint will be activated this spring.
FDL House Fire
Fond du Lac firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a vacant home that occurred early Friday morning. The two-story home was being renovated. The fire call came in shortly before 2 am to 165 West Scott Street. Smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the home when firefighters arrived. Damage was contained to a first story stairwell.
FDL County Highway V Closure In FDL During Utility Project
Fond du Lac County Highway Engineer Ryan Sommer tells us County Highway V utility work in Fond du Lac will begin Thursday in preparation for the reconstruction project. County Highway V will be closed to through traffic for about eight weeks during the utility work, and closed to all traffic at the Fond du Lac Avenue intersection. Drivers are being advised to use the east-west side roads to access County Highway V. The detour is County Highway VV and Fond du Lac Avenue during the utility work.
Spear Phishing
The Federal Trade Commission recently put out a warning about spear phishing. Jerad Albracht of the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says scammers will use information available to them on the Internet about you to make it sound like they are with a legitimate business to try and phish for even more information about you they can use to eventually get money out of you. “You would get a call from someone saying they are with some bank probably some bank in your area. That someone has been using your debit card and they have the last four digits of your card and they will claim that it was used at some retailer and they will call and they will say that they are calling to verify your social security number which ends in, and then they may have those four digits.” Albracht says despite the fact that they may have more information about than you may expect hang up. He recommends after that call the business they claim to be with and verify whether someone called on their behalf.
County Office Closings For New Year’s
Check if you have business with county or city offices to see if they are open today or closing early. Green Lake County offices are closed and Fond du Lac County offices close at noon today, except the Sheriff’s Office lobby/records office which closes at 11 am. Offices will be closed Tuesday for the New Year’s holiday.
