Burglary Suspect Facing Other Charges

The 33-year-old Fond du Lac man suspected of five daytime burglaries in the Towns of Friendship and Eldorado is going through the Fond du Lac County court system on other cases. Matthew Britton made initial appearances this week on cocaine trafficking, domestic abuse, bail jumping and resisting arrest charges. Cash bonds were set in the cases for $15,000, $5,000, and $500 respectively. He has preliminary hearings in the cocaine trafficking and domestic abuse cases on January 10th. Britton was arrested Tuesday night on a bench warrant for drug paraphernalia possession. The bail jumping and resisting arrest charges stem from his efforts to flee when he was arrested. Cash and 17 firearms were taken during the burglaries. Britton hasn’t made an initial appearance yet on the burglary charges.

Waupun Seeks CDBG Grant

The City of Waupun is seeking grant funds for a municipal building project. The common council this week approved a plan to request a Community Development Block Grant. A recent facilities survey will be used to determine which projects could be completed in a two-year window. The City would have to provide a 50-percent match for the grant. Costs for the project that is selected would have to be paid up front with a maximum price tag of $500,000.

Gun Deer Season Not As Safe As First Thought

Department of Natural Resources Secretary Dan Meyer updated the Natural Resources Board this week on the number of hunting accidents during last month’s gun-deer season. The DNR had at first reported three accidents in Columbia, Dunn and Sauk counties, but Meyer told the board there was one additional accident in Bayfield County. That ties the nine-day season for one of the safest hunts ever. In 2014 there were also four hunters injured during the deer season, but no fatalities.

The vandalism occurred in the past few weeks. The location of the vandalism wasn’t released, but public posts to the Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page indicate it may be in the Black River area. Three photos of vandalism suspects are posted on the Sheriff’s Facebook page.

Watering Important For Real Christmas Trees

Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa recommends frequently watering your tree if you have a real Christmas tree in your home this season. He says some people get their tree around Thanksgiving and others wait longer, but when it gets too dry you will know. “But as soon as your Christmas tree gets to the point where if you brush up against it and you’re starting to see a lot of needles fall off at that point the tree is way too dry and it’s a major hazard.” The National Fire Protection Association has tips on how to select and care for a tree. According to the association one of every four Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems and a heat source to close to a tree causes another one in four fires. The association also has a video at its website showing how fast a Christmas tree can burn.

Home In The Malone Area Being Donated To Habitat

Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County will be picking up a generous gift today. Habitat Executive Director Katie Karls says a home in the Malone area is being donated to them. “So it is pretty much turn-key, but it needs some updates. So we are really excited about that.” She says they will begin searching for partner families in that area very soon and then get the remodeling going. Habitat is one of 21 agencies that the Ripon Area United Way provides funding to.
