Madison Man Killed In Dodge County Accident Identified
Dodge County authorities have released the name of the 38-year-old Madison man who died from injuries suffered in a rollover accident in the Town of Elba last Sunday morning. Jack Dennis went off a curve on State Highway 16/60. He was taken to the UW Hospital in Madison where he died. Sheriff’s officials say speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the accident, which was reported about 7 am.
Campbellsport Police Put Down Rogue Steer
Police in Campbellsport Tuesday morning had to put down a rogue steer that got loose from a meat processor. In fact the big steer busted through a gate at Loehr’s Meat Service, which is just up the street from the police department. Police Chief Tom Dornbrook says someone notified one of his officers that the steer was out of control. “They ended up following it through the village and it was getting wilder and more out of control, and charging around.” Dornbrook says they didn’t have time for a Fond du Lac Sheriff’s deputy to arrive with a tranquilizer gun because it was nearing time when kids would be walking to school. An officer shot the steer in area where there were no homes lined up behind the steer, but the shot didn’t put it down. The deputy arrived after that and they got another opportunity to shoot the steer and this time killed it. No one was injured by the steer.
Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over Kicks Off Friday
City of Ripon and Town of Ripon Police Departments are among the police departments across the County that will be participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort that gets underway Friday. The campaign runs through January 1st. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Bill Tadych says the goal of the effort is to make our roads safer by discouraging people from getting behind the wheel when they are impaired. Also participating in the effort are police departments from Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac, Oakfield, Rosedale, Brandon-Fairwater, Campbellsport and Waupun. Last year in Wisconsin, alcohol-related crashes resulted in 169 deaths and more than 3,300 injuries.
Some More At Risk Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The Fond du Lac County Health Department is urging residents to use carbon monoxide detectors. It is an odorless and colorless gas. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it can be deadly, but even smaller doses can make you sick and some more than others. “People most at risk for carbon monoxide exposure, like negative effects would be infants, pregnant women, those with chronic respiratory conditions.” She says if you suspect there may be carbon monoxide building up in your home from a gas leak you can check with your local fire department to see if they have the equipment to take a reading on the levels.
Habitat For Humanity Benefits From Ripon Area United Way Campaign
Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County will not being doing a home build in Ripon this coming year, but will be active in the area. Katie Karls is Habitat’s executive director. She says they will be doing some home improvements through their “Brush with Kindness” program where they spruce up homes on a block. “This is a great program because this is giving people pride in their home ownership, kind of spruce up the outside of their home curb which makes the homeowner happy and their neighbors happy because face it curb appeal is very important and does impact our community.” She says they are also looking for volunteers for a Women’s Workshop they will be doing in Ripon this summer. Habitat is one of the 21 agencies that benefits from the donations that are made to the Ripon Area United Way.
Grothman Supports Wolves De-Listing Effort
Congressman Glenn Grothman is supporting a bill by Congressman Sean Duffy that would de-list the gray wolf from federal endangered species protection. Grothman says the gray wolf was originally at home in northern Wisconsin, but made its way south to Columbia and even Sheboygan County. He says states have to be allowed to determine whether or not there should be limited hunting of gray wolves. “I always feel the people that feel we should let the wolves grow as far as possible are not living in an area in which they have to put up with the wolves. I wouldn’t like wolves wandering around Fond du Lac, Wisconsin wandering around Ripon, Wisconsin.” Duffy doesn’t feel the Senate will support the bill so he’s trying to have it included in a federal spending bill.
FDL Festivals Gets New Director
Fond du Lac Festivals has hired a new events manager. Madelynn Sprague has 12 years of experience in events planning. She recently moved from California to Wisconsin. While in California she worked with Pepperdine University. Sprague succeeds Leanne Doyle who retired from Festivals in August. Doyle was Fond du Lac Festivals Executive Director for six years. Sprague will be responsible for planning events like Walleye Weekend and Taste of Fond du Lac. Walleye Weekend 2019 will be held at Fond du Lac’s Lakeside Park June 7th through the 9th.
