Ripon Hosts Meeting On FDL County Sales Tax

A public information meeting on Fond du Lac County’s half-percent sales tax at the Ripon City Hall last night was sparsely attended. But the County Board’s Finance Committee was able to give information to City officials about the tax and how it has benefited residents across the County. Initially the tax was approved to fund a $50 million loan as incentive to keep Mercury Marine from leaving for Stillwater, Oklahoma. But it has also helped 21 companies or municipalities including Ripon with retention and expansion efforts that have leveraged over a $1 billion in investment, created over 3,000 new jobs and helped retain nearly 1,800 more. It’s also paid for tens of millions of dollars in highway improvements. Ripon Mayor Gary Will says it would be a smart, wise and prudent decision to keep the sales tax after Mercury Marine pays off the loan in December of 2021. The committee has also held hearings on the sales tax in Campbellsport and Waupun last month and has another scheduled for Monday, December 17th in Fond du Lac at the City-County Government Center at 6 pm.
