County Clerks Oppose Election Shift

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg was one of thirty clerks who signed a statement last week opposing a shift of the State Supreme Court Race and Presidential Preference Primary to March in 2020. That would put the primary between a primary election in February and the Spring Election when the Presidential Primary is usually held in April. The cost of staging that primary statewide would be $7 million, which Freiberg says taxpayers would have to bear. “To be predicting something like this at the cost of approximately $7 million to the taxpayers because that is who will be paying this will be the taxpayers will be paying this cost for election.” Freiberg feels even more of the 72 county clerks in the state would have signed onto the statement, but it came out just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Snowplow Driver Appreciation

Fond du Lac County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says the best way you can show your appreciation for their snowplow drivers is to give them the room they need to do their job. It’s recommended drivers stay at least 200 feet behind a working snowplow. Janke has a much simpler rule of thumb. “If you can’t see their mirrors they generally can’t see you. So a lot of times when they are at intersections for instance they got to back up and do certain things to clear those intersections out so if you are right behind them chances are they wouldn’t even see you when they back up.” Janke says as tempting as it is to pass a snowplow remember the road in front of the plow is in worse shape than those behind it. He recommends staying behind the plow. Monday was Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day.

Gift Card Advice

Gift cards are convenient and easy to use whether you’re giving them or receiving them as Christmas gifts, but an official with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has a couple of tips about them. Jerad Albracht says if you purchase them in a store make sure their protective package hasn’t been tampered with. “That any protective stickers are still on there and the PIN number hasn’t been exposed that’s usually the biggest thing to look out for. When you do buy keep hold of that receipt so you have proof of activation and proof of the actual value at the time of purchase.” He also recommends using any gift cards you receive as soon as possible. Albracht says stores can go out of business rendering those cards useless. He also notes that some cards lose value over time.
