Time Is Right To Join Lakeside Municipal Court

Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner feels the time is right for Ripon to join the Lakeside Municipal Court. Over the years the City has been resistant to joining the municipal court, but the City can save some money by joining the court and having it held at City Hall once or twice a month. “For different reasons at that time it just wasn’t right for us to move in that direction, but after looking at the situation again and having conversations with them and looking at the benefits versus the cons we felt it was beneficial for us to move in that direction.” Chief Wallner says the Common Council will be asked at its next meeting to approve joining the court and if that happens the City would join the court in February.

State Attorney General Brad Schimel didn’t have to wait long to find his next job after conceding the race for Attorney General to opponent Josh Kaul Monday. Schimel served as Waukesha County District Attorney prior to his election as State Attorney General four years ago.

Dodge County Seat Belt Enforcement Effort

Police and Sheriff’s deputies in Dodge County are participating in a seat belt enforcement effort. A grant from the state’s Department of Transportation are paying for some of the extra enforcement. Among the agencies participating are police from Beaver Dam, Horicon, Mayville and Lomira and the Sheriff’s Department. Nationally seat belt use is about 90 percent, but Wisconsin falls below that. Nearly half of people killed in traffic crashes in Wisconsin in 2017 were not buckled up.

School Referendum Approvals Top Record

A report released by the Wisconsin Policy Forum shows a record number of school referendums were passed for a record amount of money in the state this year. The report indicates that 90 percent of the referendum questions this year passed for more than $2 billion. That topped the previous record by more than $200 million. This month 61 school districts in Wisconsin had referendum questions on the ballot. Voters approved 94 percent of them in 57 districts for nearly $1.4 billion in debt and revenue.

Holiday Shopping

An official with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says holiday shoppers really need to be careful with their purchases. Jerad Albracht urges shoppers to do their research and carefully scrutinize the ads and the flyers they see from stores. “The thing to remember whether you are shopping now or whether you are shopping on Friday or even through the rest of the season is that a lot of these deals have very limited product availabilities. They may have different return policies for certain products.” He also cautions not to set your expectations too high. He says the stores would like to make everyone happy, but that isn’t always the case. Friday is Black Friday the busiest shopping day of the year.
