Deer Can Be Tested For CWD
A DNR Conservation Warden says deer hunters who are concerned about Chronic Wasting Disease can still have their deer tested. Bill Hankee says it is a matter of calling the DNR Service Center in Oshkosh. “If you want your deer CWD tested you can call the Oshkosh DNR Service Center and take your deer there to get it checked.” Hankee also reminds hunters who want to donate their deer to be processed for local food pantries can do that through several meat processors in the area. That includes several processors in Dodge, Fond du Lac, Waushara, and Winnebago counties. The list is available at the DNR’s website.
Holiday Safety Reminders
Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa has a couple safety tips for people as they put up their Christmas decorations. More people will be doing that with Thanksgiving arriving. DeMaa says one of the biggest safety hazards is an overloaded extension cord. “The biggest thing we always want to encourage people to careful of is extension cord use as people start putting their decorations up. A lot of the home extension cords you need to make sure they are not getting overloaded checking the wiring carefully as you put those decorations up.” He also cautions residents to make sure the extension cords aren’t a tripping hazard. DeMaa also urges people who get real Christmas trees to make sure they are getting enough water through the holidays. He says a dry Christmas tree will go up very fast if there is a fire.
Lautenschlager Would Have Been Proud Her Son Was Elected Attorney General
State Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling says the late Peg Lautenschlager would be very proud that her son Josh Kaul was elected State Attorney General. Lautenschlager held the position herself and a number of others during her career. She called Fond du Lac home and died after a long battle with cancer in March. Shilling knew Lautenschlager. “I did know Peg and she would be ecstatic.” Schilling says Kaul will be a fantastic attorney general, very thoughtful and very pragmatic. Kaul won a close race over incumbent Attorney General Brad Schimel earlier this month.
Ripon Area United Way Dollars Fund Community Garden Program
The Ripon Area United Way provides funding to 21 different agencies. One of those Agencies is ADVOCAP, which runs a Community Garden program at Riggs Park. Lori Fernandez of ADVOCAP says they started out with three plots five years ago and today there are 20. The program is run by an experienced gardener and a volunteer coordinator. Fernandez says people benefit in several ways from gardening their own plot. “It is just such an investment in the community, people who got out there they get to work in the soil they get that connection to the ground. Also they get a connection to each other.” Fernandez says a lot of people are finding out the benefits of Farm to Fork programs. She says those who would like to participate can call their Oshkosh Office at 920-426-0150.
Winnebago Mental Health Institute First To Go Live With New Records System
Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh is the first of seven state treatment facilities using a new electronic health records system. Department of Health Services Secretary Linda Seemeyer says the new system will streamline the access and exchange of critical information. The state has a 10-year $33 million contract with Cerner to provide support for the DHS Connect system. All DHS facilities will be using the new system by the end of 2020.
FDL County Office Closings Announced For Thanksgiving Holiday
Fond du Lac County offices at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac will be closed this Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Also closed for those days are the Sheriff’s Office lobby window, Portland Street Annex including the Veterans Service Office, Highway Department, Department of Social Services and the Department of Community Programs. The Moraine Lakes Consortium Call Center will also be closed over those two days.
