Fond du Lac County officials broke ground for a $25.5 million highway garage in Fond du Lac this past week. County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says it may be the biggest project the County has ever tackled. “One of the largest construction projects we’ve done from a highway department standpoint as well as the county. It’s got multiple buildings on it and its not just 100 percent highway related although the main portion of our offices and building is highway.” At 126,300 square feet the new facility will be nearly twice as large as the original building and the five additions that were added on to it over the years. In addition there will be a cold storage building, two salt storage domes and a sand salt storage shed. The new facility is located on a 40-acre parcel and will include an outdoor shooting range and a secured vehicle impound building for the Sheriff’s Office as well as a senior services vehicle garage. Janke says foundations are being poured and the walls and roof will be erected to contractors can work on the inside of it during the winter.
