Sixth Congressional District Race

5 November 2018 News

For the first time in his three runs for the 6th Congressional District seat incumbent Congressman Glenn Grothman is facing a well-financed opponent. Democrat Dan Kohl says everyone he’s talked to during the campaign is worried about health care and Kohl says Grothman doesn’t have a good voting record on that. “He voted to take health insurance away from over 400,000 people in this state, to raise premiums by five times for older Americans and to gut protections for anyone with a preexisting condition.” Grothman has pointed out he has voted twice for covering preexisting conditions for health insurance. He also disagrees with President Trump who said this campaign is about him. “It is not about a personality, it is about issues. Are you concerned welfare reform? Do we have to get control of our borders? Do you think the tax cuts and a strong economy are a good thing.”

Party Line Voting

Candidates for the 6th Congressional District seat disagree over how much of the party line each other will be taking if they are elected to represent the district. Democratic challenger Dan Kohl says his Republican opponent incumbent Glenn Grothman is one of the most partisan of voters in Congress. “In terms of partisanship he votes with his party about 94 percent of the time. His record is clear he is out to follow his party leaders the marching orders that they send.” Grothman says there was a time when the Democratic Party was more willing to compromise on issues, but that hasn’t been the case for years. “The Democrat Party has changed over the last 20 years. Twenty years ago the Democrat Party I think would have been for a wall. They would have been against birthright citizenship. It would be very unfortunate if my opponent got in there.”

Immigration Reform

Our immigration system is broken, this much the two candidates for the 6th Congressional District agree on but how to fix it is another matter. Democratic challenger Dan Kohl says both parties need to agree on how to fix it and he’d like to see a pathway to earned citizenship. “Our system is broken we need to move toward bipartisanship comprehensive immigration reform that secures the border and also is in keeping with our values does provides some kind of pathway to earned citizenship.” Incumbent Congressman Glenn Grothman says we do need to control who is coming into the country. “If you are concerned about the borders and think we need immigrants, but those immigrants ought to be immigrants we pick I think I’m your candidate it’s something I plan working on.”
