After School Program Locations In Ripon Could Be Expanded

The Ripon Area School District and the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area are engaged in talks to add a fourth after-school program location in the Ripon area. Ripon Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says both have strong after school programs. She feels it is an opportunity to add to their programs and hopefully reduce fees at the same time. She says, “Are kids in our community and families deserve a really strong program ideally one that is more comprehensive than we have now offering additional days of coverage for professional staff days when we are off of school or bad weather days and some additional programming in the summer.” In addition to getting a break after school kids in the programs get homework help and have enrichment opportunities that help develop leadership and character. Talks about expanding the after school program have been going on for about a year and a half.

FDL County Budget Will Include Money For Security Checkpoint

The 2019 Fond du Lac County Budget will include money to staff a new security checkpoint at the North entrance of the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac. County Executive Al Buechel says three new deputies will be hired by the Sheriff’s Department to man the checkpoint with two officers manning it at any one time. That will cost nearly $223,000. Another $80,000 is being budgeted for physical improvements including the actual checkpoint. He says, “The bids came in at the North entrance and they are slightly over $80,000 for what we need to do the security improvements to the building, the physical changes. About half of that is at the checkpoint.” The equipment includes x-ray machines and metal detectors. About half of the money will be used to construct a glass wall that will replace the metal gate that is lowered to close off the clerks offices in the lobby at night. The County will pay 66 percent of the costs for manning the checkpoint and the City the remaining 34 percent.

Good Turnout Expected For Election

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg is expecting a big turnout for the November 6th General Election. She bases that in part on the number of people that have been absentee voting and registering to vote. She points out November elections typically have a higher turnout than the primary and April elections. Though she expects a good turnout she doesn’t anticipate the type of numbers they see at the polls during a Presidential election. She says, “There is a lot of enthusiasm in this mid-term election although I still don’t believe it is going to be the same amount as for a Presidential election. I feel this will be one of the highest numbers of turnout for a mid-term election that I have seen.” Freiberg has been the Fond du Lac County Clerk for ten years and was the Deputy County Clerk for a number of years as well.
