Ripon Public Library Has Its Supporters

Backers of the Ripon Public Library pleaded with the Ripon Common Council this week asking that the Council consider no further cuts to the library. All City departments were asked to make a 2.5 percent cut to their budgets. In an email that went public an official termed the library a “non-essential service.” Those addressing the Council begged to differ. Ellen Sorensen said the computer access the library provides is a way for those in poverty to get out of it. Paul Jeffries talked about a 91-year-old neighbor who is blind and depends on the books on tape available through the library. He also said the library’s value as a resource for teachers and academics was being underestimated. Mayor Gary Will urged those who want to help the library to donate to the Friends of the Library. The Council took no action on the budget when they met Monday night for a budget session. They will hold another budget session at 6 pm next Monday night prior to the Council’s regular meeting.
