Suspect In Oshkosh Robberies Pleads To Substantial Battery Charge

One of the two Green Bay men suspected in robberies near the UW-Oshkosh campus last month has reached a plea agreement. Eighteen-year-old Nasir Jackson pleaded “no contest” to a substantial battery charge when he appeared in Winnebago County court this week. Three other charges were read into the record and dismissed. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for February 1st. Jackson and 20-year-old Domonick Strope are accused of attacking four people last month. A wallet was stolen from one of the victims. A woman who was knocked unconscious during the attack suffered a brain bleed. Strope will be arraigned on November 12th.

Thiesfeldt Sees Light At The End Of The Tunnel For Hwy 23 Project

For years State Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt has been one of the biggest supporters of expanding State Highway 23 from Fond du Lac to Plymouth to a four lane highway, now he sees some light at the end of the tunnel. The signing of two documents by state and federal officials this week puts construction on a path that could start next year. But Thiesfeldt says there is a 150 day challenge period during which someone could file a lawsuit challenging the results of those documents something the project has run into before. He says the impact of delays from the 1000 Friends of Wisconsin lawsuit added to traffic fatalities and serious accidents on that 19-mile stretch of roadway. He says, “The delays have been far too long and frankly the delays have cost a few people their lives and there have been a lot of accidents that could have been avoided.” Construction could start next year and wrap up in 2022.

Heroin Conspiracy Busts Had Impact

When 11 people were arrested for heroin trafficking in Fond du Lac County in early 2017 it had an impact on the heroin supply. All 11 have since been convicted in a conspiracy in which $1 million in heroin had been sold over a nearly two year period ending in February of 2017. District Attorney Eric Toney says when customers of those drug dealers were interviewed they said the heroin supply dried up in the wake of those arrests. He says, “They had said it was virtually impossible or difficult to find heroin in the community after the arrests.” Toney says that is important because it gave some addicts the opportunity to reach out for help and get on the path to recovery. The ringleader of that heroin conspiracy 38-year-old Allen Ferguson of Fond du Lac pleaded guilty to heroin trafficking charges last week.

Mascoutin Valley Craft Beverage Trail

Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith is inviting residents to enjoy a “Gastro Tourism Experience.” It is called the Mascoutin Valley Craft Beverage Trail. It’s a self-guided experience that includes visiting the Knuth Brewing Company and Vines & Rushes Winery in Ripon and the Rushford Meadery & Winery and Hendricks Family Distillery in Omro. Some restaurants including Roadhouse Pizza are also participating. He says, “And their all located within 20 minutes of each other. So you could really make a fun afternoon amongst all the stops there and then we’ve also partnered with a couple of other restaurants in other locations that have craft beverages there.” Mansmith says next March the trail will be featured on Discover Wisconsin. Beaver Dam Robbery Suspect Charged

Bond was set at $100,000 cash for the 25-year-old Beaver Dam man suspected of robbing Kornely’s Craft store last Saturday. According to the criminal complaint Adrian White threatened to kill a store clerk if they didn’t turn over all the money in a cash register. He fled the store on a bicycle and ended up on foot before he jumped into the Beaver Dam River. Police officers found him lying near the water’s edge. He told officers he had just met his marijuana dealer and was on his way home when an officer pointed a gun at him so he fled on foot. He will be back in Dodge County Court for a preliminary hearing on October 25th.

Beaver Dam Joins Effort To Eliminate Dark Store Loophole

Beaver Dam is one of the latest cities to join a state wide initiative to eliminate the “Dark Store” property tax loophole. The City’s Common Council this week passed a resolution backing the initiative, which asks for elimination of the loophole big box retailers use to get lower property tax assessments. The stores argue they should be taxed as if the store were closed and was not doing business. The loophole shifts the tax burden to other property owners. The Waupun Common Council passed a similar resolution last week.
