Farm Vehicle Safety

Harvest time means slower moving implements of husbandry and farm equipment moving on our rural roads. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Mark Putzke says for drivers that means having to exercise some patience. He says, “So if you have a harvest season you know and you see that there is a lot of machinery out and about. A lot of bigger, smaller machinery all different types. Consider that into your day, be patient.” Putzke notes there are rules governing the use of that farm machinery on roads, which includes yielding the right of way to faster moving approaching traffic and yielding half of the road. There are also rules for no passing zones and lighting requirements. He says for motorists you also have to consider weather, the time of day, and also the season of the year.

Efforts To Connect Off Road Recreation Trail

The Director of Planning and Parks for Fond du Lac County says they’ve tried to develop an off road recreation trail over the years that connected the cities of Ripon and Green Lake. Sam Tobias says they did run into some issues. He says, “Unfortunately County Government over there couldn’t see their way to pursuing that as a project, it is a great idea but it was a tough hill to climb with land acquisition and money for development and so forth and it never happened.” Tobias does say that Green Lake County has tried to create a side road off Highway 23 on the south side of the road. He says there is a path in Green Lake County already that comes over to County Trunk A on the east side of the City of Green Lake and they hope to carry that eventually to the County line which would hook up to the Northwestern Trail.
