Jury Finds Man Guilty In Credit Card Skimming Thefts

An 18-year-old man tied to a Romanian credit card skimming ring has been convicted in federal court. A jury found Inoel Moresanu guilty of four counts of aggravated identity theft this week. Police in Oshkosh caught Moresanu after they noticed several men repeatedly using a convenience store ATM. They found 80 counterfeit access devices on him. He admitted to stealing credit card information and making repeated withdrawals. He will be sentenced in December. Two other Romanian men are facing similar charges in Fond du Lac County Court.

Ripon Request For Proposals Generating Interest

City of Ripon officials hope to have requests for proposals for two city-owned buildings ready for approval by their next meeting on September 24th. They were discussed during the Common Council’s meeting this week. The buildings are the at 230 and 300 Watson Street and once housed the Mapes Hotel and the American House assisted living center. City Administrator Lori Rich says they previously had some interest in the properties given to the city as part of the Boca Grande settlement. She says, “We had a couple developers interested and it didn’t work out so now we are doing the RFP process to see if we can reach some developers.” Rich says she met with some interested individuals when news of the RFPs got out and Mayor Gary Will also got a call.

Highway 44 Improvement Project

Governor Walker has approved spending $1.9 million to improve 9.8 miles of State Highway 44. The stretch will be from the south Fond du Lac/Winnebago County line near Pickett to State Highway 91 in the City of Oshkosh. The project begins next Wednesday and will finish next month. Highway 44 will remain open during construction.

Senator Feyen Delivers GOP Radio Address

State Senator Dan Feyen was asked this week to deliver the Republican Radio Address. The state lawmaker from Fond du Lac touted the $100 million targeted for school safety improvements. $48 million was awarded to 723 schools and school districts during the first round of grants. Feyen says the state’s Department of Justice will be awarding a similar amount during a second round. He says, “The second round of grants will focus on supporting mental health programs, additional physical upgrades, further staff training, and collaborations between educators, counselors, and law enforcement.” Feyen said in the Radio Address Wisconsin has taken strong steps forward to guarantee our schools are as equipped as possible to combat any threats to our children. He notes children are the future of our state and ensuring their safety should be our number one goal.

Volunteer Reception Center Closes Early

The volunteer reception center in Plymouth for those who wanted to pitch in with storm clean up efforts in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties. has closed. Team Rubicon needed no more volunteers for their effort, so the center was closed two days ahead of schedule. A total of 19 tornadoes moved through the area on August 28th including more than 10 in Fond du Lac County, and two each in Dodge, Green Lake and Marquette counties. Local officials were grateful for the assistance with damage clean up.

Cable Scam

Markesan Police are warning residents about another “too good to be true” scam. This one involves a scammer calling you posing as an employee with your local cable company. They tell you they have a deal for you that will lower your bill by more than $40 a month. All you have to do is provide your credit card numbers to complete the billing. Police says if you get a call from someone claiming to be with Spectrum or another cable or satellite dish provider who make those promises and want personal information just hang up. It will really save you money.

Sparsity Aid Payments Distributed

Several area school districts are among the 145 school districts across the state that will be sharing in $25 million in sparsity aid payments from the state. Among them is the Green Lake School District, which will get $101,600. The Montello School District is receiving $296,000. Oakfield will get $206,000 and the Princeton School District will receive $163,200. The state’s Department of Public Instruction says sparsity aid is distributed to sparsely populated districts and can be used to offset the costs of educating students.

Septemberfest Includes Dog Walk

There are plenty of activities associated with Ripon’s Septemberfest Saturday in downtown Ripon, but one is for the dogs. Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith says in fact the Dog Walk is the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter’s biggest fundraiser of the year. He says you are welcome to bring your dog down to the Village Green to enjoy the fun. He says, ” If you just want to bring your dog along and be a part of it and see what’s all a part of this like a contest for tail wagging and dress your dog like you kind of stuff all that information is on their website.” Other activities include the 20th annual Watson Street Car Show, motorcycle show, pancake breakfast, kolors run, live music, artist vendors, and more.
