Gary Trent Jr. scored a season-high 29 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks improved their hold on fifth place in the Eastern Conference by defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 111-107 on Sunday night.

Milwaukee rested Giannis Antetokounmpo after he played 43 minutes — and had 36 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists — in a 121-115 overtime victory at Miami on Saturday night.

Brook Lopez had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Bucks (44-34), who won their fourth straight, and took a full game lead on idle Detroit (43-35).

New Orleans was without four starters, and usual reserves for both clubs seized chances to play more.

Milwaukee’s Kevin Porter Jr., who had 24 points and 12 rebounds off the bench in Miami, got the start in New Orleans and scored 20 points. Ryan Rollins added 14 points and 10 assists.

Antonio Reeves scored 23 and fellow rookie Yves Missi had 18 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans, which lost its third straight. Second-year pro Lester Quinones, playing in just his ninth NBA game this season, scored 17 points.

The Bucks turned 12 Pelicans turnovers into 18 points.

The Bucks host Minnesota on Tuesday.

Jackson Chourio homered twice and matched a career high with five RBIs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday.

Chad Patrick (1-0) allowed one run and two hits over 5 1/3 innings for his first major league win. Since starting the season 0-4, the Brewers have won five of six.

Spencer Steer went deep for the Reds, who have dropped five of six.

Chourio hit a sacrifice fly in the third to open the scoring, and Christian Yelich had an RBI single. Chourio then capped a five-run fourth with a three-run homer that made it 7-0.

He added a solo shot in the seventh.

Brice Turang had two hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games and Sal Frelick’s strong start to the season continued when he singled and scored in the fourth.

The offensive support made life easy for Patrick, who struck out four in his second big league start. The only run he gave up came when Steer led off the fifth with his first home run of the season.

Cincinnati added another in the eighth on an RBI single from TJ Friedl.

Reds starter Carson Spiers (0-2) permitted four runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings. He was replaced by Sam Moll, who served up Chourio’s three-run homer to left field.

The Brewers get their first day off of the season Monday before RHP Freddy Peralta (0-1, 2.08) faces LHP Kyle Freeland (0-1, 2.13) and the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Coors Field.

In other Brewers news, Milwaukee placed left-hander Nestor Cortes on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a flexor strain in his left elbow, further depleting the team’s starting pitching.

The loss of Cortes leaves the Brewers with Freddy Peralta as the only healthy pitcher among those projected to be in the five-man rotation this season.

Cortes’ elbow problem surfaced last weekend following a rough outing that saw him give up three home runs on consecutive pitches and five overall in a 20-9 loss to the New York Yankees. Imaging tests revealed no structural damage, and Cortes threw six shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night.

Cortes said the elbow didn’t feel right on Friday, and on Saturday he and the team agreed he needed to go on the injured list. Left-handed reliever Grant Wolfram was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.

The Brewers said further testing would be done on Cortes’ elbow.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Pirates nipped the Reds 5-4, the Padres shaded the Cubs 8-7 and the Cardinals lost a doubleheader at Boston to the Red Sox 5-4 and 18-7.

Page Bueckers, Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong led the way as UConn returned to the top of women’s college basketball by rolling to an 82-59 victory over defending champion South Carolina on Sunday.

Fudd, who was named the Most Oustanding Player of the Final Four, scored 24 points. Strong had 24 points and 15 rebounds, and Bueckers scored 17 points for UConn (37-3).

Bueckers capped her stellar career with the Huskies’ first championship since 2016, ending a nine-year drought for the team. That was the longest period for Auriemma and his program without a title since Rebecca Lobo and Jen Rizzotti led the Huskies to their first championship in 1995.

The men’s college basketball championship is tonight with Houston Cougars play the Florida Gators. Houston stunned Duke 70-67 to reach the championship game while Florida beat Southeastern Conference rival Auburn 70-73.  Tipoff is at 7:50.

On the men’s PGA Golf tour, Brian Harmon won the Valero Texas Open Sunday in San Antonio by three shots.  Harmon handled the win and the chill with a pair of key birdies  on the back nine, closing with a three-over 75, his title since the 2023 Open Championship.
