Worries About Vehicle Speeds On Local Detour For Hwy 23 Project

(The State DOT’s detour for the Hwy 23 Project)

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials are concerned about an unofficial detour residents are using to get from Fond du Lac to Rosendale and vice-versa during construction on State Highway 23. Local drivers are taking Esterbrook Road or County Highway T to Forest Avenue Road and cutting across to State Highway 26 where they go north to Rosendale and then continue west on Highway 23 to get to Ripon. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says Forest Avenue Road doesn’t have wide shoulders and the road isn’t as wide. It also has curvy stretches and the first few miles are in a 35-mile-an-hour zone through a residential neighborhood. It’s a residential stretch, there are kids playing and we are getting a lot of cars at high speed or highway speeds through that stretch so we are enforcing the speed limit there pretty heavily and then Forest Avenue Road has also got a weight limit of 10 tons or 20,000 pounds.” He says semi-trailers and box trucks shouldn’t be using the road. Residents in the residential area have posted “Children Playing” signs in an effort to get drivers to slow down.
