Highway 23 Project From Rosendale To FDL Starts Monday

The state’s Department of Transportation is reminding drivers about the State Highway 23 project that will improve the highway from Rosendale to Fond du Lac. It starts next Monday. Improvements will include resurfacing of Highway 23 and overlaying the existing bridge over the Fond du Lac River. Highway 23 will be closed from July 9th through August 31st and traffic will be detoured. Mark Kantola of the DOT says the official detour will use Highway 26 and I-41. The detour will be from Becker Blvd. in the village of Rosendale to Townline Road in the city of Fond du Lac. Kantola says, “If you own a property there or own a business there you can still get to your property. So local access will still be maintained. But all through traffic should use the detour, the state detour is 41 and 26.” From August 31st to late October the detour will be removed and Highway 23 will remain open to traffic using lane closures and flagging as needed. It’s a $5 million project.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin toured a Fond du Lac manufacturer Thursday afternoon to meet with company leaders and workers, and announce her new legislation to strengthen Buy America requirements. Fives Giddings & Lewis is an industry leading provider of large, high-precision machine tools and has been a staple of Wisconsin manufacturing since 1859, celebrating its 160 year anniversary next June. Senator Baldwin’s Made in America Act identifies federal programs that fund infrastructure projects not currently subject to Buy America standards and ensures that materials used in these federal programs, including steel, iron and aluminum, are domestically produced.

Forum Will Feature Three Waushara County Sheriffs Candidates

The Wautoma Rotary Club will be sponsoring a forum with the three candidates for Waushara County Sheriff this month. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Thursday, July 19th at the Waushara WW II Memorial Building in Wautoma. Rotary President Dr. T.J. Rinaldi says it is an opportunity for the public to meet the candidates and find out more about them. He says, “I know that we see the signs out there and we know that these people are going to be leading us in the years to come and yet we don’t always have a way that we can meet them, talk to them aside from shaking hands with them at a parade. I think it is going to be a well-attended event. We are expecting over 100 people.” The three candidates are Berlin Police Chief Dennis Plantz, and Sheriff’s Deputies Wally Zuehlke and Lafe Hendrickson. Some issues in the race include ATV use and K9 funding.

Waupun Fire Drill Was A Success

Waupun’s Fire Chief says a fire drill at Waupun Memorial Hospital this week involving a simulated fire in the Department of Corrections secured unit went well. It was a collaborative effort between hospital officials, police and fire, and the DOC. Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says there were a lot of things each department learned along the way. They did two patient rescues using mannequins. One took the patient down a stairwell from the secured unit and the other out a third story window via a ladder truck. DeMaa says an observer with experience in these types of drills was impressed with the effort. He says, “We actually had a gentleman from St. Mary’s in Madison, their security director. He actually commended the groups for the amount of participation that they had on a drill. He said coming from a bigger city it is not something he is used to seeing. “It was the second year in a row police and fire officials held a large scale drill with Waupun Memorial Hospital.
