Waushara County Has New Emergency Management Director

Waushara County has a new Emergency Management Director. Norm Duesterhoeft has only been on the job for 3 months, but he’s been busy. He is putting together a plan for municipalities on how to handle emergencies in the county. He says a base document outlines roles and responsibilities within that municipality and how it would work with the County agency so that they could work together. He adds, “Each municipality is responsible for the development of their own plan but it is important that it is incorporated within the County plan so that the County knows when we need to step in when their resources are exhausted to assist them in their recovery effort.”

Keeping Cool During Extreme Heat

With heat indexes expected to push into the triple digits this weekend a public health official has some tips to stay cool. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the simple advice is stay cool and drink plenty of water. But not everyone has air-conditioning. Mueller says if that is the case go to a place that has it such as a mall or a library. She also urges us to keep an eye out for older loved ones and neighbors. She says, “So if you know of any older friends or family members that live alone and don’t have air-conditioning this would be a perfect time for you to chat with them a little bit about ways to keep themselves cool.” Mueller says if you have a rapid heart beat and skin that is hot to the touch you should try to cool down immediately. She recommends using cold packs and applying them to the back of your neck and under your arm pits.
