Supreme Court Will Not Review Dassey Judgment
The U.S. Supreme Court Monday denied Brendan Dassey’s request to review the judgment that upheld his conviction for the 2005 murder of free-lance photographer Teresa Halbach. The high court did not give a reason for its denial. Dassey is serving life in prison for the murder committed in Manitowoc County. Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery were both convicted of first degree intentional homicide in separate jury trials. Dassey was 16-years-old when Halbach was killed. His lawyers argued Dassey’s confession was coerced by investigators. They claimed the investigators used improper techniques while interrogating a juvenile with a low IQ.

Congressman Grothman Comments On Farm Bill
Congressman Glenn Grothman voted for the Farm Bill last Thursday, which narrowly passed in the House by a 213 to 211 vote. The package will oversee more than $430 billion of food and agricultural programs over five years. It contains a number of measures which are aimed at strengthening farm subsidies. It also contains a controversial proposal that would require most adult food-stamp recipients to do some work to receive those benefits. Grothman commented on the bill while he was serving up food at the Fond du Lac County Breakfast on the Farm this past Sunday. He says, “It was a good bill for the farming community and it’s a good bill in that it would begin to require some work requirements for food stamps.” Agriculture contributes $45 billion to the state economy each year.
Green Lake County Board Updates Ordinance
The Green Lake County Board of Supervisors last week approved repealing and recreating a County ordinance for speed limits on County Highways and Town Roads. County Judge Mark Slate suggested the change to the County’s Traffic Safety Commission. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Mark Putzke chairs that commission. He says the changes brought clarity to the ordinance and won’t change speed limits on those roads and highways. He says for instance there is a reference to the speed limit near the Berlin Town Hall on County Highway A. He says the hall was relocated years ago and the site is now a church. He says other references to buildings and landmarks in the old ordinance also needed to be updated. The original ordinance was adopted in November of 1991.
Phone Scam Warning
Markesan Police are warning residents about a scam in which the caller says they are raising funds for the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association. Police say the phone number that turns up on caller ID does not match any real law enforcement group. They urge people to be skeptical of anyone calling saying they are from a group wanting money. If you wish to give to the real Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers Association they have a website and near the top of the home page is an option to donate to the actual group.
