HOLIDAY BLUES

Not everyone has a wonderful experience during the holidays. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say their communications center recently took a call at 2 am from a distraught teenager saying she was on the roof of a parking ramp in downtown Fond du Lac and was thinking about jumping. The dispatcher calmed her down and convinced her not to jump while other resources were dispatched. Fond du Lac Police and Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. Officers found the young woman with one leg over the edge of the ramp. They were able to pull her back off the ledge. She was reconnected with her family and resources to get the help she needs. Resources are available in Fond du Lac 24/7. If you or a person you’re aware of are in crisis and not sure where to turn, you can contact the Fond du Lac County Crisis Intervention Hotline at 920-929-3535. If there is an immediate life safety risk, call 911.

FIRE DESTROYS BARN IN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY

Fire destroyed a barn in Northern Sheboygan County last Thursday night. Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah Fire Departments were dispatched to N7950 Willow Road in the Town of Rhine at 6:38 pm. The barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Ultimately about 21 fire departments responded to the blaze, Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah First Responders, Plymouth Ambulance, Sheboygan County Sheriff’s deputies, County Highway Department workers, and the County Fire Investigation Unit. The barn was a complete loss, but firefighters were able to contain the fire to the barn and protect an adjacent building where animals were being kept. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is being determined.

ROUNDABOUT DISCUSSION SCHEDULED IN NEW LONDON

The state’s Department of Transportation will be holding a public involvement meeting Wednesday to discuss the possible installation of a roundabout at the U.S. Highway 45 and County Highway D intersection in New London to address safety concerns. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to listen to the discussion, ask questions of project staff and provide input. The meeting is from 5 to 6 pm Wednesday in the Council chambers of the New London Municipal Building. A short presentation is planned for 5 pm. The remainder of the meeting will follow an open-house format. Concerns were raised about the safety of the intersection in the fall of 2023 during a public involvement meeting on proposed improvements to US Highway 45 between New London and Clintonville. To address those concerns the DOT is considering the installation of a roundabout at US Highway 45 and County Highway D.

ICE CONDITIONS NOT SAFE

Officials with the state’s DNR urge the public to practice early-winter ice safety on all of Wisconsin’s waterbodies and remember that no ice is safe ice.  The temperature swings that mark the final weeks of every year can create ice covers. The ice covers hide the currents, debris and underground springs still feeding lakes and rivers. The DNR does not monitor ice conditions, but they are monitored locally. Local fishing clubs, outfitters and bait shops are the best sources for local current ice conditions. However, the DNR says the best idea for safe winter fun is to enjoy outings without travel over ice. Wautoma Police Sunday posted a video on their Facebook page showing a Tik Tok video shot on Lake Puckaway in which an SUV went through the ice trying to travel over the lake. The driver was able to crawl out a window onto the ice. Wautoma Police say the lakes they checked only had about 4 inches of ice, which isn’t safe enough to support a vehicle.

QUEST MURRAY PARK MERGER PROPOSAL

Over the next two months the Ripon School Board will decide whether to merge the Quest Charter School with Murray Park Elementary School. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says the charter school’s agreement comes up for renewal at the end of the 2025 school year. She says after seeing what was accomplished with the merger of the Journey Charter School and Barlow Park Elementary, the Quest Governance Board is considering something similar. A decision will have to be made prior to the open enrollment period which is February 3rd through April 30th. The Quest Governance Board is working on a decision now. Whitrock says the merger will come up as a possible action item on the school board’s agenda this month and could be acted on next month. She points out Quest is located at Murray Park Elementary School so students and staff would stay right where they are. She adds that the two schools already do quite a bit of collaboration.

The SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital Auxiliary is sponsoring its 37th annual “Lights of Love” program, a living memorial or tribute to friends, relatives or dedicated citizens of the community. Bobbie Pollesch of the Auxiliary says proceeds from this year’s project will help fund the purchase of 12 mattress air pumps for patient beds to improve patient comfort while decreasing pressure wound risk. Lights of Love provide the opportunity for individuals, groups, or businesses to purchase lights in honor or memory of loved ones for a gift of $5 or more. The colored lights on the large holiday tree outside of Ripon Community Hospital shine in appreciation or recognition of a living friend, family member or employee, while white bulbs are in memory of a loved one. The names of these individuals will be listed in the Lights of Love book display in the hospital lobby and posted on the SSM Health website. There will be no tree lighting event, but the tree will be lit on Thursday. Lights of Love brochures, including donation forms, are available at the hospital information desk and gift shop.
