Two Fond du lac men arrested in connection with the murder of a Fond du Lac man outside the Press Box tavern last fall appeared in court Monday. 22 year old Devon Neuman and 23 year old Jesse Schultz face charges of party to the crime of first degree intentional homicide and party to the crime of robbery in the September 23 death of Logan Foster. Police chief Bill Lamb says the suspects were identified after police released security camera photographs of two men walking in the area of where Foster’s body was discovered. Investigators believe the men attempted to rob Foster, a physical altercation ensued and Foster was shot twice and killed.

Five people have reported getting sick following a salmonella outbreak at Jimmy Johns restaurants in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is working in coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection; local health departments; and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the outbreak. All cases involve persons who reported eating sprouts at a Jimmy John’s restaurant location around the state during mid-to-late December. In addition, people diagnosed with the outbreak strain in other states have also reported eating sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurant locations in their state. Officials are working to identify the source of sprouts supplied to the restaurants where people ate prior to becoming ill and if the product was distributed to other locations. To reduce the risk of becoming ill, DHS has requested that Jimmy John’s locations in Wisconsin remove sprouts from their menu until the investigation is completed and advises that consumer not eat sprouts from Jimmy John’s at this time. As more information is available advice to the public will be updated.

A proposed grant could make it less costly for Wisconsin farmers to harvest and transport leftover produce to food banks. Republican Rep. Scott Krug of Nekoosa is one of the lawmakers behind legislation that would create a $250,000 grant through the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Local farmer Paul Miller says he’s been donating extra carrots from his fields to area food banks for the last seven years. But Miller says it costs him several thousand dollars to harvest and transport the vegetables. David Lee is executive director of Feeding Wisconsin. He says the high cost of harvesting and transporting produce can be a barrier that stops farmers from donating extra produce. Krug says he hopes to vote on the measure next month.

The Wisconsin Harbor Assistance Program has awarded about $8 million in grants to improve transportation and access at ports and harbors across the state. Door County’s Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding received the largest grant. The $3.6 million grant will be used for dock wall construction and dredging. Jason Serck is director of planning, economic development and ports in Superior. He says Fortune 100 company Cenex Harvest States has received $1.7 million to replace about 600 feet (180 meters) of dock wall. The program’s most recent two-year budget received $14.1 million in bonding authority and $4.5 million in segregated funds. The program began in 1979 and has given around $130 million to more than 100 projects.
