FDL MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE

Bond has been set at $750,000 cash for a 39-year-old Fond du Lac man suspected of shooting a man in the city of Fond du Lac last month. Miguel West is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide by use of a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, both with repeater enhancers. He made his initial appearance in Fond du Lac County court Tuesday and will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on November 7th. Police and Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue were sent to the area of 1st Street and Adams Street the evening of Saturday, September 28th for reports of gunshots. About five minutes later officers found a 48-year-old Fond du Lac man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his left leg and left arm a few blocks away on South Portland Street. An officer applied tourniquets to stop the blood loss. Early the next morning West turned himself in to police. The victim identified West as the shooter.

RIPON COMMON COUNCIL SETS PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED WHEEL TAX

The Ripon Common Council has scheduled a public hearing during its December 10th meeting for a proposed wheel tax. The Council discussed the proposed wheel tax during Monday night’s Council meeting. Council members seemed reluctant to institute a new tax on city residents, but they are also looking at ways to maintain the 42 miles of streets in the city. At the current rate of improvement, it would take 102 years to improve every road in the city. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the city’s capital improvement plan over the next five years amounts to about $13 million. But that is for major street improvement, water, sewer, and other capital improvement projects. The city will use state road aid, tax levy, grants, borrowing and shared revenue to pay for it. Sonntag says a $20 wheel tax would generate more than $154,000 a year and a $25 tax $192,000 which would go into a capital fund for street improvements. The city is not able to institute a gas tax or sales tax. Another option is going back to an assessment system for street projects which Sonntag estimates would cost homeowners $2,000 to $10,000 on streets that are being improved. He told the Council it would take 90 days from passage of a wheel tax to institute it and it would be year before the money could be used to improve streets.

PRESIDENTIAL SECURITY

The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office was asked to assist with security for visits by Presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in Ripon and Dodge County recently. Green Lake County Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk says it is not unusual to be asked to assist neighboring law enforcement agencies, but rare for something on this scale and they were happy to help out the Ripon Police Department for Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Ripon College. He says the event at the Dodge County Airport in Juneau for former President Donald Trump had a bigger crowd but was much the same when it comes to security. Vande Kolk says they have a great relationship with law enforcement agencies in the area. He notes it is also a great opportunity for their staff to get a chance to see how security for an event like the visits is handled and how to do it properly.

JOHN ZARBANO RUNS FOR CONGRESS

Congressional candidate John Zarbano feels he can do a better job representing the 6th Congressional District than incumbent Congressman Glenn Grothman. The retired lawyer from Oshkosh says that’s why he’s running against Grothman. Zarbano says the economy in Wisconsin is pretty good right now with inflation at a lower rate and record low unemployment. The Democratic candidate says both men and women have the fundamental right to make their own health care decisions and women especially. He is concerned about the availability of housing and affordability. He also says we need to do more for our veterans. He feels they have issues navigating the bureaucracy for their benefits and also have problems with transportation to medical appointments. Zarbano notes Grothman has been in Congress for 10 years and was in the state legislature for 20 but hasn’t done a good job representing all the people of the 6th Congressional District. You can read more about his views at his website John Zarbano.com.

CHERISH FUND SUPPORTS HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS

The state’s Department of Natural Resources and Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin encourage hunters purchasing their licenses to consider donating to the Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Fund, which helps fund conservation, projects around the state. The Cherish Fund is primarily built through voluntary contributions from the public when they purchase their hunting and fishing licenses through the DNR’s Go Wild License portal. DNR Deputy Secretary Steve Little says, “The fund, now nearly $3 million, will continue to help improve and protect critical habitat across the state for years to come.” The DNR and Foundation announced Tuesday that nearly $80,000 in recent funding will help support five habitat projects on public lands in Calumet, Dane, Florence, Sauk and Vilas counties.
