INFORMATION SESSION TONIGHT ON MARKESAN SCHOOLS REFERENDUM
The Markesan School District will be holding an information meeting tonight about its $26 million school facility improvement referendum. The district is asking voters on November 5th to approve that amount for improvement projects. Those improvements would include an addition and renovations at the Elementary School, including for classrooms, art, music, special education, the library and offices. At the Middle/High School renovations would be made for a secure entrance. There would also be district-wide capital maintenance, building infrastructure and site improvements, and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment. If approved the referendum would increase the district’s mill rate by $2.58 per thousand dollars of value on a property. INTERSTATE 41 PROJECT IN FDL COUNTY BEGINNING
Construction begins today to improve 14.2 miles of I-41 from County Highway D or Military Road in Fond du Lac to State Highway 26 in Winnebago County. The $25.9 million project is expected to finish in October of 2025. Culvert and prep work for crossovers and shouldering will be conducted under interstate lane closures during off-peak hours. Typical closure times are from 7 pm to 7 am for northbound traffic and 6 pm to 6 am for southbound traffic. Typical work weeks will be Monday night through Friday night. The prime contractor for the project is Northeast Asphalt of Greenville.
HALLOWEEN SEX OFFENDER MONITORING
This Halloween, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections will again be working with local law enforcement agencies across the state to closely monitor sex offenders on probation or parole and keep children safe during Halloween trick-or-treat activities. DOC Probation and Parole Agents, working with law enforcement, will conduct random home visits on high-risk sex offenders during trick-or-treat hours. Individuals on the sex offender registry who are on probation or parole are prohibited from having Halloween decorations inside or outside of their homes, may not distribute candy or participate in other trick-or-treating activities and must keep their porch lights off during trick-or-treating. Any sex offenders in violation of the “Trick of Treating Restrictions” will be placed into custody.
LEAGUE STAYS NONPARTISAN
The President of the League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area says they are very careful about being a nonpartisan group when it comes to elections. Ellen Sorensen says they do not promote specific candidates. She says for example recently they cancelled two scheduled forums because only one of the two candidates for that office agreed to participate. She says staging a forum with only one of the candidates would have implied support for that candidate. Sorensen says for league leadership sometimes maintaining that nonpartisanship can get a bit difficult. She says she was serving on a hospital board when she learned Governor Evers was going to be at the hospital for a press conference and she had to excuse herself from attending. She notes while they don’t endorse candidates the League sometimes takes stances on issues or policies for instance a referendum on the November ballot which would change wording in the State Constitution on the right to vote.
DIVERSE OPTIONS GOT TALENT
Officials at Diverse Options in Ripon are excited about a talent show fundraiser they are holding at Immanuel United Methodist Church this Thursday. Next year will mark their 50th year of providing services to those with developmental disabilities. They serve all or portions of Fond du Lac, Dodge, Green Lake, Marquette, and Waushara counties. They are all about integrating their “consumers” into the community. Mary Robichaud is the Communications and Media Manager at Diverse Options. She says some of their consumers will be showing off their talents in the show modeled after America’s Got Talent. No big prizes will be awarded but there is pride on the line for the performers. Miss Wisconsin 2024 Mandi Genord will be there, she is one of the judges. The Talent Show is from 5:30 to 8 pm Thursday. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $10.
