CLINTONVILLE MAN COMMITTED TO PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY FOR MOTHER’S MURDER

After about 3 ½ hours of deliberation Monday a Waupaca County jury decided the 20-year-old Clintonville man convicted of stabbing his 39-year-old mother to death was not guilty by reason of insanity. Jordan Peters was then committed to a secure psychiatric facility for the rest of his life. Last Thursday the jury had found Peters guilty of first degree intentional homicide, but because he had previously pled not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect they had to return for deliberations Monday on whether he was mentally responsible for the murder.  In September of 2023 Peters had moved to Clintonville. His mother, Angela Zahn, was visiting from Neenah and the two were driving on Memorial Circle. Peters, who was in the front passenger seat, allegedly stabbed her in the chest. She was able to pull over and get out of the vehicle. She was taken to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center where she died.

RIPON MAN CHARGED FOR DISTURBANCE WITH PIPE BOMB FACSIMILE

Bond has been set at $25,000 cash for a 54-year-old Ripon man who caused a disturbance at an apartment in the city with what appeared to be a pipe bomb. According to the criminal complaint the victim allowed James Goss to stay in their apartment because he was homeless and they have a 14-year-old daughter together. Last Saturday night the woman asked him to leave the apartment after he showed her what looked like a pipe bomb even though she did not believe it was. At that point he took a paring knife from the kitchen and held it to his neck. The woman and her daughter left the residence and called police. Ripon Police and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies responded. A downstairs neighbor was asked to evacuate the building and a nearby neighbor to shelter in place. Goss was contacted by phone and asked to come out of the apartment which he initially wouldn’t do. Eventually he did and was taken into custody. Police found the pipe, electrical type, and USB cord used to make it look like a pipe bomb in his vehicle. Goss is charged with felony bail jumping, and misdemeanor criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 25th.  (Fond du Lac County Jail photo).

OSHKOSH DRUG ARREST

Five Oshkosh residents were arrested on drug charges Tuesday morning following the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the 600 block of Ceape Avenue. Charges varied but included maintaining a drug dwelling, methamphetamine possession and delivery, drug paraphernalia possession, and fentanyl possession. Two of suspects were also arrested for probation holds. The Oshkosh Police Department’s Vice and Narcotics Unit, detectives, and the Department’s SWAT Team, conducted the search warrant at the residence.

ADVOCAP LOOKING AT OPPORTUNITY CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS

The Executive Director of ADVOCAP says they will be opening an opportunity center for the homeless at their office at First and Macy Streets in Fond du Lac. Tanya Marcoe says an increasing number of the homeless are the elderly who can’t afford the soaring cost of rent. She notes with colder temperatures warming shelters will be opening for the homeless to stay overnight. A new shelter from Holy Family Parish in Fond du Lac will be opening at First and Marr Streets on November 1st. It has 35 beds. Marcoe says the homeless can only stay there overnight which means there is no place for them to go during daylight hours. Marcoe says they are working with the City of Fond du Lac to open an opportunity center at the ADVOCAP offices. She says they will be able to help those who can’t read, need a computer to review services they don’t know about, and mailboxes for them to receive mail. She says to receive benefits you need an address for the paperwork involved.

MANUFACTURING MONTH

Envision Greater Fond du Lac President and CEO Sadie Howell says manufacturing is important to our job market and economy. She says for every dollar spent on manufacturing that generates $2.79 in the economy and for every manufacturing job 7 to 12 other jobs are supported. She says some of those other jobs would support the manufacturing process but then again it might just be the person who serves you coffee, or the nurse at your doctor’s office. Howell says last week she traveled to Scotland. While there she asked locals what kind of jobs people have in the area. She says some of the examples she was given included public servants, working at the whiskey distillery, or you might be a farmer with some sheep. Howell notes the economy in Scotland is very volatile, while here we take for granted the stability that manufacturing provides in Fond du Lac County. October is Manufacturing Month.

CYBER SECURITY MONTH

The Administrator for the state’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says when it comes to cyber security it doesn’t hurt to take a couple of extra measures. More websites are now requiring a multi-factor or second login authentication. Michelle Reinen says that means after you have entered your initial password the site may send you an email or text with a code to verify authenticity. She equates it to a second lock on the front door to your home. She also recommends setting your computer or phone to lock when they are not being used. She points out that will provide you with protection should your device become lost or if it is stolen. October is Cyber Security Month. You can find more tips at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection website.
