10/9/24 Hometown Broadcasting Sports Wednesday

9 October 2024 Sports

The Packers return to the practice field Wednesday and will host the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at Lambeua Field. Green Bay is 3-2 after a win over the Rams in Los Angeles and the Cardinals are 2-3 after upsetting the 49ers on the road.

The Packers will get an extra boost at wide receiver as Romeo Doubs will be back. Packers’ coach Matt LaFleur said Monday that he had a “productive” meeting with Romeo Doubs and expects the third-year receiver to be back with the team when it returns to practice Wednesday. The Packers handed Doubs a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team after he didn’t attend practice on Thursday or Friday.

“It’s a pretty isolated incident,” said LaFleur, who didn’t go into details about his conversation with Doubs. “This has not happened with him before and I don’t expect it to happen moving forward.”

The Packers’ leading receiver in their 24-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams was tight end Tucker Kraft with four catches for 88 yards. Jayden Reed was the top wide-out, with four catches for 78 yards, but Green Bay’s other wide-outs combined for just 46 yards receiving.

Jordan Love went 15 of 26 for 224 yards — including two touchdown passes to Kraft — but he also threw his first career pick-6. Love has thrown five interceptions in his three starts this season.

“It just comes down to being smart with the ball, and I’ve got to do a better job with that,” Love said after the game.

For the second straight week, the Packers outplayed a team in the second half. After nearly coming all the way back from a 28-0 deficit (it was 28-7 at halftime) in a 31-29 loss to Minnesota, the Packers beat the Rams by outscoring them 14-6 after halftime. They forced two more turnovers Sunday and turned both into touchdowns. They have an NFL-leading 14 takeaways this season. … The offense showcased its big-play ability, with Love throwing a 53-yard completion to Jayden Reed that set up one touchdown plus a 66-yard completion to Kraft. The offense remains hit-or-miss. In the first half, the Packers scored just 10 points. They punted on two straight fourth-quarter drives, giving the Rams the ball with a chance to win in the closing minutes. … The Packers allowed the Rams to rush for 134 yards on 28 carries. Kyren Williams gained 102 yards on 22 attempts.

S Xavier McKinney intercepted a pass for the fifth straight game and recovered a fumble that Kingsley Enagbare forced. McKinney actually has an interception in six consecutive games, if you count the one he picked off for the New York Giants in their 2023 season finale. The only other players since 1990 to have an interception in six straight games were Carolina’s Doug Evans (2001), Minnesota’s Brian Russell (2003) and Dallas’ Trevon Diggs (2021). … S Evan Williams again demonstrated his knack for delivering with the game on the line when he provided the coverage on Matthew Stafford’s fourth-and-5 incompletion to Colby Parkinson that sealed Green Bay’s victory. The rookie fourth-round pick also recovered an onside kick and intercepted a Hail Mary pass in Green Bay’s 16-10 victory over Indianapolis.

In the National League Divisional Playoffs the Mets won at home over the Phillies 7-2 to take a 2-1 lead in their best of 5-game series. In the other NL Division game the Padres nipped the Dodgers 7-6 to take a 2-1 lead in their series.

Game four of those respective series are today.

The American League Divisional Series continues today as Cleveland is at Detroit with that series tied at a game-each and the Yankees are at Kansas City against the Royals with that series also knotted at a game apiece.

On Tuesday the Ripon cross country team completed in the Laconia Invitational. They were one of 17 teams at the meet.

The girls’ finished second out of five teams in Division 3 with 41 points while the boys’ team place 2nd out of six teams with 78 points.

The top runners for the boys and girls were Aidan Ruedinger in 4h and Abby Baird, who won the girls’ meet.

The Tigers will travel to Lomira Thursday, October 10th, for the Lomira Invite. The meet will begin at 4:00 with the Middle School race.

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday it will produce and distribute local broadcasts for the Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins next year. All three teams had contracts with Diamond Sports Group that expired at the end of the regular season.

The Texas Rangers, whose deal also expired last month, also announced they will no longer be partnering with Diamond and are assessing their options for next season.

The addition of the Guardians, Brewers and Twins means MLB will be handling the production and distribution of at least six teams going into 2025.

MLB took over broadcasts of the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2023 season and the Colorado Rockies this year.

The broadcasts are expected to be on local cable systems as well as satellite and direct-to-consumer streaming.

By taking over the broadcasts, MLB expects to increase the market reach of its teams. Cleveland games were available on approximately 1.45 million households on its regional sports network. That reach is expected to increase 235% to 4.86 million households. Minnesota’s will go up 307% from 1.08 million homes to 4.4 million.

MLB could be taking over more teams as Diamond Sports Group continues to go through bankruptcy proceedings. The nation’s largest owner of regional sports networks could be down to doing only Atlanta Braves games in 2025.

The operator of the Bally Sports regional networks presented its reorganization plan in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston last week. As part of the reorganization, Diamond plans to void the contracts of the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays and to attempt to rework the deals of the five franchises that are partial owners of their regional sports networks — the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.

A final hearing on Diamond’s reorganization plan is scheduled for Nov. 14. Diamond also has the rights to 13 NBA and eight NHL teams.

Robert Saleh will not get a chance to turn around the New York Jets’ careening plane.

The Jets fired Saleh on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported, per sources informed of the situation.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich takes over as interim head coach, Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager reported, per sources.

After sticking with Saleh entering Year 4, firing him five games into the season is a surprising move by the New York brass. In 56 games as head coach, Saleh compiled a 20-36 record, never generating a winning season. His final game with the Jets was a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

The Jets later confirmed Saleh’s firing.

Defense wasn’t the issue under Saleh, as Gang Green finished in the top 5 in yards allowed and top 12 in points in each of the past two seasons. Through five weeks in 2024, New York’s D ranked second in yards allowed and fifth in points given up. However, the Jets could never figure out the offense, ranking in the bottom quarter of the NFL in yards and scoring in each of his four seasons. The inability to help develop Zach Wilson counted against Saleh’s scorecard. New York cycled through six QBs in the coach’s three-plus seasons at the helm.

Aaron Rodgers acquisitiion in 2023 was supposed to change things for New York. However, a Week 1 Achilles tear wiped away that plan in Year 1. Saleh bungled the transition with Wilson, cycling through quarterbacks last season. Through five games this season, the offense still struggled under Nathaniel Hackett and Rodgers, as Gang Green has averaged 18.6 points per game and rarely found any consistency in an outdated scheme.

While Saleh and Rodgers said the right things, the relationship never seemed settled. An odd disagreement about the quarterback’s cadence becoming a storyline in New York last week underscored the seeming disconnect between coach and quarterback. Shrager, however, was told Rodgers did not have a signifcant role in the decision to fire Saleh.
