Jackson Chourio tied the game in the eighth with his second homer of the night and Garrett Mitchell delivered a two-run shot later in the inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday that evened their NL Wild Card Series.
The teams will play a decisive Game 3 on Thursday night. The Brewers will attempt to become the first team to rally win a best-of-three Wild Card Series after losing the opener since MLB went to this expanded playoff format in 2022.
Milwaukee trailed 3-2 when Chourio led off the eighth by homering to right-center off losing pitcher Phil Maton, making his fourth appearance on the mound in five days. The 20-year-old rookie also opened the bottom of the first inning with a drive to right, becoming the youngest player to hit a leadoff homer in the postseason.
After Blake Perkins singled and William Contreras hit into a double play, Willy Adames kept the eighth inning alive with a single. Mitchell then sent a first-pitch curveball just over the wall in right-center, a 390-foot shot that sent the American Family Field crowd into a frenzy.
Devin Williams retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the save. Joe Ross picked up the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mets will send LHP Jose Quintana to the mound tonight against RHP Tobias Myers. First pitch is at 6:00 CDT from American Family Field.
In other NL Wild Card game the Padres nipped the Braves 5-4 to win that series 2-0.
In the AL Wild card round the Tigers eliminated the Astros in two games with a 5-2 victory at Houston and the Royals did the same to the Orioles with a 2-1 win in Baltimore. They advance to their respective divisional series.
The Packers returned to the practice field as Jordan Love’s workload continues to increase.
“It looks like he’s just getting back in the groove. Like I mentioned the other day, not that we want to throw 50 some odd times in a game, but I thought the more we threw, the better he got,” said head coach Matt LaFleur.
Love returned to the game field Sunday against Minnesota at home, and seemed to be rusty in the first half. Especially when it comes to his accuracy.
Love settled into the game this past week against the Vikings, throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. He also came out of the game injury-free after taking a few hits.
“It’s one of those things, question marks going in , how would it feel gettng hit? getting twisted and things like that? i came out of the game fine, i am def liking where my knee is at coming out of the game. gives me confidence going forward,” said Love.
The Packers injury report is getting longer though. Jaire Alexander, Christian Watson, Devonte Wyatt, Kenny Clark, Luke Musgrave, and Elgton Jenkins all sat out practice on Wednesday.
Head coach Matt LaFleur believes the Packers may have dodged a bullet with Watson’s ankle injury, which may not require a trip to the injured reserve.
But, there’s still some uncertainty about Wyatt’s injury.
There was some good news on the injury front as rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan returned to the practice field after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury.
Cornerback Carrington Valentine was back on the practice field as well after dealing with an ankle issue.
