Jackson Chourio hit a two-run home run, Frankie Montas pitched six scoreless innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 3-0 on Thursday night to take another step toward clinching the NL Central.
The Brewers, who hold a nine-game lead over Chicago in the division, took two of three from the Giants and reduced their magic number to seven.
The game was scoreless until Milwaukee’s Willy Adames reached base with a walk in the seventh and rounded the bases on three Camilo Doval (0-1) wild pitches. Milwaukee added to the lead when Chourio hit a two-run shot off Spencer Bivens in the eighth, scoring Brice Turang after he reached on an infield single.
The 20-year-old Chourio became the youngest player with a 20-homer, 20-stolen base season in MLB history.
The Giants had the tying run on base with one out in the ninth after Mark Canha singled and Jerar Encarnacion doubled to left off Brewers closer Devin Williams. Williams responded by striking out Grant McCray and forcing pinch hitter Patrick Bailey to ground out for his 11th save.
The Giants had a runner in scoring position six times and never plated a run.
There were only four hits in the game — two for each side — through six innings as Montas (7-10) struck out eight and San Francisco starter Hayden Birdsong struck out four in five innings.
No runner advanced past second base until Adames scored.
The Giants had a chance to take the lead in the fourth after consecutive two-out walks, but Montas got Encarnacion to line out to right. Curt Casali added a one-out double in the fifth but was stranded.
Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill pitched scoreless innings for Milwaukee before Williams entered in the ninth. The Brewers continue their west coast road trip, beginning a three-game series with the Diamondbacks on Friday. Freddy Peralta (10-8, 3.81 ERA) will start for Milwaukee while Arizona will start withEduardo Rodriguez. First pitch is at 8:40 CDT.
There was just one other game in the NL Central Thursday as the Cardinals beat the Reds 6-1. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 9 games and the Cardinals are 10 games out.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers erased a 6-4 deficit in the 9th inning to earn a walk-off 7-4 win and advance to the Midwest League Championship Series.
The T-Rats had fought back all night in Game 2 of their divisional series against the Quad Cities Bandits. They trailed 3-2 early, 4-3 in the 8th, and then 6-4 entering the bottom of the 9th inning.
Luke Adams singled to score Cooper Pratt on the game winner.
Hank the Dog, a stray who captured the Brewers’ hearts when he wandered into their Spring Training complex in 2014, died Thursday, the club confirmed.
It was a stadium security guard who gave Hank his name — after Hall of Famer Hank Aaron — in February 2014. A veterinarian who examined him surmised that he’d been run over by a car
The Packers continue to practice for Sunday’s home opener against the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field. The status for quarterback Jordan Love is still up in the air but if he can’t play, backup Malik Willis will take over. Jordan injured his left MCL last Friday night in the season opening loss to the Eagles in Brazil.

In Thursday Night Football the Bills won at Miami over the Dolphins 31-10. The Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa was intercepted three times with Ja’ Marcus Ingram having his biggest NFL game, with his first two career picks.
Tagovailoa left the game late in the third quarter with a concussion. It was the third three-INT game of Tagovailoa’s career, with the final pick run back 31 yards for a touchdown and a 31-10 Buffalo lead.
The Bills Josh Allen was 13 of 19 for 139 yards and a touchdown. He only ran the ball twice, for two yards.
Bills Running back James Cook scored three touchdowns, including one from 49 yards out.
The Badgers host #4 Alabama Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium. The pregame starts at 9:00 with the kickoff at 7:00 and can be heard on AM 1600/93.1 FM, WRPN.
Ripon College (0-1) hosts Grinnell College on Saturday. The Red Hawks opened the season with a tough road loss to North Park University last week, 42-41. Kickoff is at 1:00.
UW-Oshkosh plays Linfield University (Oregon) Saturday. The Titans opened the season with a 21-14 win last Saturday over 9th ranked Wheaton College (Illinois). Kickoff is at 1:30.
