REMAINS FOUND IN MANITOWOC COUNTY COULD BE THAT OF ELIJAH VUE
It’s been nearly seven months since 3-year-old Elijah Vue went missing now there is possible closure for family, friends, and those who have volunteered to search for the missing toddler. Unidentified human remains were discovered by a deer hunter on private property in Manitowoc County Saturday. It could be weeks before the remains found near Camp Manitou are positively identified. The area where the remains were discovered is just northwest of Two Rivers, less than five miles from the apartment complex where Elijah was reported missing. Elijah was staying with his mother’s boyfriend Jesse Vang at the time of his disappearance. Vang reported him missing on February 20th. Elijah’s mother, Katrina Baur, had sent her son to live with Vang for disciplinary reasons. Both are charged with child neglect. No one has been charged in connection with Elijah’s disappearance.
HUMAN CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN DODGE COUNTY
Dodge County Public Health officials say the county has its first human case of West Nile Virus this year. It’s the fourth human case in the state this year. Other counties with cases include Brown, Fond du Lac, and Outagamie counties. In Brown and Fond du Lac County cases the person who was infected died. West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Eighty percent of humans infected with West Nile Virus will not experience symptoms. However, for the remaining 20 percent, symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and occasionally a rash. In less than 1 percent of cases, the virus can lead to severe illness. To avoid mosquito bites apply insect repellant to exposed skin and clothing. Avoid going outdoors during evening and early morning hours. Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors. It is also important to remove stagnant water and empty any containers with standing water in your yard. Change the water in bird baths and pet dishes every 3 days. Mow or trim tall grasses, weeds, and vines.
HIGHWAY SHUT DOWN TO NEGOTIATE WITH SUICIDAL WOMAN
Authorities in Waupaca County Monday had to close down a portion of Highway 10 to deal with an armed suicidal woman. State Patrol officials say law enforcement agencies were trying to locate the woman. About 8:40 am, a trooper saw her vehicle and stopped it. Both east and westbound lanes of Highway 10 at County Highway A were closed down when she brandished a weapon. Authorities negotiated with her and she subsequently gave up her weapon and was arrested. Highway 10 was reopened a couple of hours later.
FDL COUNTY DRIVE SOBER ENFORCEMENT RESULTS
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office conducted 732 traffic stops during the recent Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The traffic stops resulted in 249 citations and 314 warnings. Deputies also issued 77 citations for speeding and 64 citations for operating after suspension or revocation. There were a total of 15 arrests for operating while under the influence. Of those arrests 12 were for a first offense, one for a second, one for a third, and one was a first OWI with a minor child passenger. Sheriff’s officials say whether the cause is alcohol, prescription medication or other drugs, impaired drivers endanger everyone and it’s a problem they take seriously throughout the year.
EAST OSHKOSH STREET CLOSURE
City of Ripon officials are advising residents that East Oshkosh Street will be closed from September 23rd through September 27th. The closure on East Oshkosh Street will be from Stanton Street to Sheppard Street for railroad and paving work. Oshkosh Street will be closed at railroad crossings. Oshkosh Street/Stanton Street intersections may be closed at times during pavement replacement. There will be traffic and turning limitations at times. Drivers are asked to use Douglas Street and State Highway 23 for detours. Those with questions can call Public Works Director Allyn Dannhoff at 920-869-0984. STAYING PREPARED
Fond du Lac County Director of Emergency Management John Ross says National Preparedness Month is a good time to practice your emergency plan, develop one, or update the plan that you have. He says most importantly have a plan. Know where you’re going to go, in the event of a fire what your escape routes are, and where the family will reconnect afterwards. Next have an emergency kit that will sustain you for at least 72 hours with nonperishable food, water, and medications. You should also include flashlights, first-aid supplies, a NOAA Weather Radio, copies of important papers and contact numbers. Ross says you should also try and stay informed via NOAA All-Hazards Radio, local TV or radio, cellphone apps, or the internet. September is National Preparedness Month.
DEPUTY EVANS AND IRO SUPPORT APPRECIATED
Unofficially Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Blaine Evans and Iro put in a few practice patrols before they officially hit the streets last Thursday following a ceremony at the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s Captain Chris Randall says the ceremony was a way of thanking the public for all the gifts and support during the nearly year-long recovery Iro made from bullet wounds suffered during a domestic incident in Fond du Lac last October. Captain Randall says their office was inundated with gifts and donations since the start. Iro recently successfully completed recertification training. In April Deputy Evans and Iro received Awards of Valor from the Wisconsin Professional Police Association. Others were recognized for their roles in helping to save Iro’s life. DEMENTIA FRIENDLY TRAINING
Fond du Lac County’s Aging and Disability Resource Center will be holding a free 60-minute Dementia Friendly Training session at Ripon Immanuel United Methodist Church Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. ADRC Dementia Care Specialist Alyssa Sommerfeldt will be conducting the training for community members who want to understand more about Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. You will be able to learn dementia friendly communication tips, become familiar with local resources, and create an environment that is safe, respectful and welcoming for people living with dementia. Everyone is welcome. Approximately 2,267 people in Fond du Lac County are living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Seventy percent of them are living at home.

Tickets are still available for the Young Professionals of Fond du Lac 17th annual Casino Night. The event is Friday night from 6 to 10:30 pm at South Hills Country Club in Fond du Lac. The evening has a roaring 20’s theme a tribute to the 20th year for YPF. There will be food, drinks and gambling with proceeds going toward YPF programs. Young Professionals of Fond du Lac is an Envision program. It is for those 21 to 40 years of age or young at heart. Dave is a member he says YPF it is a great network and socializing opportunity. The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs says some lucky veterans will get a chance to Jump Around at Camp Randall in November. The Department is distributing free tickets to the Veterans Day Wisconsin Badgers Salute to Veterans football game. Winners will get a chance to watch the Badgers take on the Oregon Ducks in Madison on Saturday, November 16th. A limited number of free tickets are available. Veterans and service members can register to win up to two tickets online at Wis Vets Sports.com through this Sunday at 11:59 pm. The University of Wisconsin Athletic Department generously provides tickets each year so veterans and their guests can enjoy the game.
