Aaron Civale and Aaron Ashby combined on a two-hit shutout and William Contreras stole home to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 6-0 on Thursday.

The NL Central-leading Brewers (77-56) won two of three from the Giants. They are 9 1/2 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the biggest division lead in the majors.

The Giants (67-68) went 2-4 on a six-game trip to fall below .500.

Garrett Mitchell homered for the Brewers, and Jackson Chourio drove in two runs. Contreras went 2 for 3 and drove in a run, to go along with his steal of home.

Civale (5-8) worked seven innings for his longest outing of the season. He struck out seven while allowing only two hits and two walks in his third quality start in his last four outings.

The 29-year-old right-hander owns a 1.45 ERA in five starts at American Family Field since the Brewers acquired him in a July 3 trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

“Just worked on getting the delivery in a good spot,” Civale said. “It’s on me to go out there and compete. That’s the emphasis with each pitch, is just to throw a competitive pitch. Whatever happens, know that the work behind it is valid, and just having confidence in that.”

Ashby pitched two perfect innings, striking out three.

The Brewers scored two runs in the second off Hayden Birdsong (3-4).

Mitchell hit a one-out homer to right-center. Gary Sánchez followed with a walk before advancing to third on a Joey Ortiz double and scoring on Blake Perkins’ sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee then capitalized on some aggressive baserunning to make it 3-0 in the third.

With runners on the corners and two outs, Willy Adames attempted to steal and was about two-thirds of the way toward second base when Giants shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald took the throw from catcher Patrick Bailey. Adames then headed back toward first, with Fitzgerald moving to his left until he was halfway between first and second.

At that point, Contreras took off from third and attempted to score. Fitzgerald threw to third rather than going to the plate, and third baseman Matt Chapman bobbled the ball before he could throw home. Contreras slid across the plate without a throw and was credited with a steal of home.

The Brewers added three more runs with a two-out rally in the fourth. After Birdsong started the inning with two strikeouts, he walked Blake Perkins and Brice Turang.

Chourio greeted Sean Hjelle with a two-run double to right and scored on Contreras’ base hit to left.

Birdsong struck out six but allowed five runs on four hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. It was the rookie’s second straight start in which he walked four batters.

The Brewers begin a four-game series at Cincinnati with a Friday doubleheader. RHP Colin Rea (12-4, 3.61 ERA) will start the first game Friday for the Brewers. No other starting pitchers for Friday’s doubleheader have been announced. The first game starts at 11:40 and the second  game at 5:40.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Cardinals beat the Padres 4-1and the Reds nipped the A’s 10-9. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 9 ½ games, the Cardinals by 10 ½, the Reds by 13 ½ and the Pirates are 15 games behind.

In the Midwest League Thursday Quad Cities beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-2 at Fox Cities Stadium. They play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.

The Packers held a closed practice Thursday. Green Bay is a week away from opening its season in Sao Paulo, Brazil against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Green Bay Packers claimed K Brayden Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans and signed S Omar Brown and LB Chris Russell to the practice squad. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions on Thursday.

Narveson (6-0, 215), a rookie out of North Carolina State, was originally signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2024, but was released following training camp. In the preseason, he connected on 6 of 7 field goals and made both extra point attempts. Narveson appeared in 57 games during his collegiate career, playing his final season at N.C. State (2023) after three seasons (2020-22) at Western Kentucky and two seasons at Iowa State (2018-19). He scored 409 points overall, converting 71 of 91 field goal attempts and all 196 extra point attempts in his college career. Narveson will wear No. 44 for the Packers.

Brown (6-1, 205), a rookie out of the University of Nebraska, was originally signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2024, but was released after training camp. He appeared in 52 games (37 starts) at Nebraska (2022-23) and the University of Northern Iowa (2019-21), recording 196 tackles (127 solo), three forced fumbles, 25 passes defensed and nine interceptions during his collegiate career. Brown started eight games in 2023 and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades after recording 51 tackles (35 solo) two forced fumbles, four passes defensed and an interception. He will wear No. 40 for the Packers.

Russell (6-1, 235), a rookie out of Texas A&M, took part in the Packers’ rookie minicamp this past May as a tryout player and was with Green Bay for part of training camp. He saw action in 58 games in college, recording 112 tackles (59 solo), 10 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, three passes defensed, an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. In 2022, Russell started all 12 games and finished No. 3 on the team with 66 tackles (33 solo), earning defensive Most Improved honors at the annual team banquet. He will wear No. 46 for the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame officially welcomed two new members Thursday evening with its 53rd induction banquet.

Before that happened, Aaron Kampman and Clay Matthews reflected on their time here in Titletown.

In a Packers green suit and wearing his Super Bowl 45 ring, Matthews says being inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame brings his career full circle

The 2009 first round draft pick out of USC spent 10 seasons in the green and gold. Known for his predator celebrations, Matthews made six Pro Bowls and finished as the team’s all-time leader in sacks.

Just down that all-time Packers sack list, at fifth, is Kampman. The 2002 fifth round draft pick played eight of his 10 seasons in Titletown.  The two-time Pro Bowler says the relationships here are what made the greatest impact on him.

The pair overlapped in Green Bay only one season, but now will be together forever as two of the 170 Packers Hall of Famers.

Former Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers was the presenter for Matthews. Joe Urcavich, a former chaplain for the team, presented Kampman.

Wisconsin hosts Western Michigan tonight to open their season at Camp Randall Stadium.  Wisconsin leads 4-1 in the series.

Wisconsin: QB Tyler Van Dyke, who transferred from Miami, is trying to bounce back from a 2023 season in which he struggled with injuries and threw a career-high 12 interceptions. The Badgers would love to see Van Dyke recapture the form he showed in 2021, when he threw 25 touchdown passes with only six interceptions and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s rookie of the year.

Wisconsin is coming off back-to-back 7-6 seasons and enters the year outside the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2016.

The pregame starts at 6:00 with the kickoff at 8:00 and can be heard on AM 1600/93.1  FM, WRPN.

Meanwhile, former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio has joined Wisconsin’s staff as a senior adviser to head coach Luke Fickell. Del Rio’s roles will have him working with both the offense and defense as he assists Fickell.

The Athletic first reported Del Rio was joining Wisconsin’s staff. Del Rio spent the last four years as the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator but was fired 12 games into the 2023 season. He has a 93-94 record in a 12-year NFL head coaching career that included stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-11) and Oakland Raiders (2015-17).

He played linebacker in the NFL from 1985-95 after a stellar college career at Southern California.
