DODGE COUNTY SEX OFFENDER COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION MEETING

Officials in Dodge County held a sex offender community notification meeting in Brownsville last night to inform the public about the release of 40-year-old Garon Leitzke. He will be living at W2691 State Highway 49 just outside of Brownsville. Leitzke was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child and repeated sexual assault of the same child in May of 2002. The convictions were in Dodge County. In April of 2006 a petition was granted finding him to be a sexually violent person and he was committed to the Sandridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston. He will be released next Thursday.  The residence Leitzke will be living at was at the center of a previous controversy over the placement of two sex offenders in 2015, but ultimately the offenders were placed elsewhere. During last night night’s meeting, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said he still has issues with Leitzke’s placement. He told the gathering he does not recommend the location as suitable. Leitzke will be on GPS monitoring the rest of his life. He will not be able to leave the residence without an approved chaperone for at least the first year. Sheriff Schmidt said for the community’s sake his department will have an extra presence there something Leitzke will be aware of.

MARSHALL MAN LEADS AUTHORITIES ON TWO COUNTY TWO DAY CHASE

A 20-year-old Marshall man is facing 21 different charges for pursuits involving stolen vehicles in Dane and Columbia Counties Sunday and Monday. James Dixon in his efforts to elude deputies used several stolen vehicles, one with a trailer, and a UTV driving on highways and through corn and soybean fields. Columbia County Sheriff’s officials say on Monday they were able to successfully deploy tire deflation devices on County Highway K but Dixon was able to drive the SUV he had stolen into Dane County’s Town of Bristol. As he approached the intersection of County Highway V and County Highway N he turned into a soybean field and the SUV became disabled. After a short foot pursuit he was taken into custody. He was taken to the Columbia County Jail. He made his initial appearance in Columbia County Court yesterday. He is charged with one count each of second degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer, burglary, resisting an officer, two counts of vehicle theft, and 15 counts of felony bail jumping. A total of $8,500 in cash bonds was ordered and he will return to court on October 11th. (Columbia County Jail photo)

PERTUSSIS VACCINATION RECOMMENDED

Fond du Lac County’s Public Health Officer urges parents to make sure their kids are up to date on the vaccinations they need for school. Kim Mueller says the county is in the midst of a pertussis or whooping cough outbreak and it is not alone in that regard. She says the cases are not linked and all counties in Wisconsin are experiencing pertussis outbreaks. She points out pertussis is highly contagious. Symptoms include severe coughing fits, “whooping” sounds occur when breathing in, sneezing, runny nose and other cold-like symptoms. If your child has those symptoms seek medical attention by calling your provider. Pertussis is part of the DTaP or Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis vaccination. Parents can opt out of vaccinations by signing a waiver.

TEAM RIPON HUNT APPROVED

The Ripon Common Council this week approved another year of bow hunting for deer within the city limits for Team Ripon. Last year the team harvested 10 deer total with eights does and two bucks. Over the past 17 years the team has been able to reduce the urban deer population by 208 deer. That in turn reduces the damage they cause to property and safety issues created by deer in the roadway. The hunters are only allowed on specific property. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the council it is hard to find appropriate locations for the hunt. Meat from the deer is taken by hunters, and donated to food pantries and nonprofits. The team is only allowed to hunt on identified properties from September through February. There were no injuries or property damage associated with the hunt this past year.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

September is National Preparedness Month and the Fond du Lac County Emergency Management Director is urging residents to make their own plans in case of an emergency.  John Ross says emergencies can include fire, natural disasters, technology related incidents, a hazardous materials release, or cyber-attack. He says in the event of a disaster local government officials partner with agencies like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United Way, but individuals and families also need to plan and prepare. He recommends making a plan, knowing where your shelters at home, work and school are located and how you will safely leave the building in the event of fire. Have an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food, water, and medication to last up to 72 hours. Other musts include first aid supplies, a flashlight, a NOAA Weather Radio, along with copies of insurance policies, prescriptions, and a list of important contact numbers. Store your kit in a location where you can access it quickly during an emergency. He also suggests keeping informed during emergencies. Avenues for that include NOAA All-Hazards Radio, local TV and Radio, cell phone apps and internet sites such as the National Weather Service.

TOP CHEF HALO EFFECT

The chairperson of the State Senate’s Agriculture and Tourism Committee says the past season of the Bravo Network’s Top Chef which was filmed in Wisconsin had a positive impact on the state. Senator Joan Ballweg says it is called the Top Chef Halo effect. She says it enhanced interest in all things culinary. As a result the state’s Tourism website now features culinary tours. Each one of the Top Chef episodes featured a 30 second commercial about Wisconsin with half promoting state tourism and the other half the appeal of living, working, and locating a business in Wisconsin. The state lawmaker from Markesan says they are hoping to do the same thing during the NFL Draft in Green Bay next April with a similar TV commercial. She says a lot of eyes will be on Wisconsin during the draft.
