HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY AFFECT AIR QUALITY

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says high heat and humidity days like we went through the past few days can also affect air quality. She says there is so much moisture in the air it makes it more difficult to breathe for some people. She notes it also is more difficult for skin to properly ventilate and sweat which the body needs to do. Mueller says if we do run into another day or two of high heat and humidity this summer remember if you work out doors to take frequent breaks to allow your body to cool down and make sure you are well hydrated.

UW BUDGET AND BUILDING REQUEST

The University of Wisconsin Systems’ Board of Regents are asking for an $855 million increase in the UW’s budget over the next two-year budget cycle. Joint Finance Committee member Senator Joan Ballweg says the board promised a tuition freeze if that happens. Ballweg, who also sits on the State Building Commission, says the UW also has an ambitious building program as well. They want $1.7 billion to make improvements at the Madison campus. They also plan to repurpose and redevelop old hospitals on the UW-Milwaukee campus, make improvements at the UW-Parkside, and the UW-Eau Claire.

RIPON COMMON COUNCIL NOTES

The Ripon Common Council this week approved several agreements and resolutions which included offering city employees dental insurance. The insurance actually required two resolutions including a change to the employee handbook. One of the agreements will allow Wisconsin and Southern Railroad to operate on a spur the city owns on North Douglas Street that serves the Industrial Park. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Council the line won’t be used much. The other agreement is a professional services agreement with MSA for $89,500 to help with work associated with improvements at Selfridge Park. The estimated budget for the project is $840,000 with the city awarded a $418, 240 Stewardship Grant from the state for Phase 1 of the project. Planned amenities for the park include two open-air shelters, two fishing piers, a kayak launch, shoreline restoration, and playground coordination. Other site development will include benches, parking lot improvements, asphalt and concrete paths, landscaping, site lighting and park signage.

Those who are interested in knowing more about the position should call Captain Troy Damsteegt at 920-748-2888.
