27 August 2024 Sports

After an off-day the Brewers are back in action tonight, with the first of a three-game series against the Giants at American Family Field. RHP Tobias Myers (6-5, 2.87 ERA will take the mound for Milwaukee against Giants RHP Logan Webb (11-8, 3.13). First pitch is 7:10.

In games played Monday in the NL Central the Cubs pounded the Pirates 18-10 and the Padres beat the Cardinals 7-4. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 10 games, the Cardinals by 10 ½, the Reds by 12 ½ and the Pirates by 13 1/2 games.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers host Quad Cities tonight at Fox Cities Stadium with the first pitch set for 6:40.

Danny Jansen’s former team beat his current one on Monday, when George Springer cleared the Green Monster with a 416-foot home run and seven Toronto pitchers combined on a four-hitter to beat the Red Sox 4-1 in the completion of a game that was suspended by rain in June.

Jansen, who went to Appleton West High School,  made history as the first major leaguer to play for both teams in the same game, starting it as the Toronto catcher on June 26, when it was halted — with Jansen at bat — in the second inning. The backup catcher was traded to Boston on July 27, and he was behind the plate when the game resumed on Monday after a delay of 65 days, 18 hours and 35 minutes.

Jansen had one of Boston’s hits, a fifth inning single. (He was not credited with an at-bat for Toronto; he went to the plate and fouled off one pitch before the tarps came out on June 26, and Daulton Varsho was credited with the strikeout after Nick Pivetta fanned him on two more pitches.

The Green Bay Packers are making a move for their backup quarterback. The Packers are reportedly trading for Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He’s expected to be the backup for Jordan Love.

Willis was a 2022 third-round pick out of Liberty. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, starting three contests. Willis has not thrown a touchdown pass in a regular season game, but did rush for a touchdown versus the Texans in 2022.

Willis performed better in the preseason this year but couldn’t beat out Mason Rudolph for the backup position behind Will Levis.

After Willis’s first year with Tennessee, the Titans selected Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. With the Titans steering more towards Levis, Willis only saw the field in three games last season.

Meanwhile final cuts will be announced by 3:00 this afternoon as teams get down to the 53-man roster limit in time for the regular season. With the Willis trade that leaves last year’s backup Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt’s status uncertain. One of those two may be available for the practice squad.

Wisconsin defensive lineman James Thompson Jr. could miss the entire season after undergoing surgery on what the school described as an upper-body injury.

The injury leaves the Badgers without their most experienced defensive lineman as they prepare for their Friday night opener against Western Michigan. Thompson has started 18 games over the last two seasons.

Thompson made 11 starts last year and collected 29 tackles to lead all Wisconsin defensive linemen. He also had 5 1/2 tackles for loss and three sacks.

That followed a 2022 season in which he started each of Wisconsin’s last seven games. Thompson had two sacks and 6 1/2 tackles for loss that year.

Fickell didn’t officially rule Thompson out for the season but expressed pessimism about the lineman’s likelihood of returning this year.

Coming off back-to-back 7-6 seasons, Wisconsin is opening the year outside the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2016.

Training camp is over and the Green Bay Packers begin their season next week, but quarterback Jordan Love isn’t just game planning for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Love spent his Monday at Green Bay West High School, hanging out with the football team and promoting a new initiative for his Hands of 10ve (“Love”) Foundation, called “10ve for Cleats.”

For every touchdown that Love runs or throws this year, the foundation will donate a new set of Nike cleats to a lucky youth sports team of any kind inside the state of Wisconsin.

Applications will open in December. Wisconsin schools and teams of all levels, ages and genders are encouraged to apply for their teams to get cleats.

The overall mission of the Hands of 10ve Foundation is to encourage children from all backgrounds to engage in sports, promoting physical and mental well-being. It also works to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention and foster stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
