Frankie Montas pitched seven sparkling innings and Devin Williams escaped a jam in the ninth, helping the Milwaukee Brewers beat the reeling St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Montas (6-8) allowed one hit — Alec Burleson’s single in the fourth — in his fourth start since he was acquired in a trade with Cincinnati. He struck out three and walked one.

William Contreras had three hits for the NL Central-leading Brewers, who earned their sixth straight win. Sal Frelick added two hits.

Matt Carpenter homered for St. Louis in its seventh loss in eight games. Erick Fedde (8-7) was charged with two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Carpenter’s fourth homer of the season — a pinch-hit drive with Lars Nootbaar aboard in the eighth — got St. Louis within one.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Williams struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman — both swinging — for his fifth save.

Frelick drove in Willy Adames with a two-out single in the second. Frelick also tripled and scored on Joey Ortiz’s single in the fifth.

It was the first multihit game since Aug. 8 for Frelick, who broke out of a 1-for-14 slump.

Contreras doubled home Garrett Mitchell for a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

Carpenter’s drive was his sixth career pinch-hit homer and his first since April 30, 2021, against Pittsburgh.

Brewers RHP Trevor Megill (low back injury) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list, and RHP Elvis Peguero was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

The Brewers will start RHP Tobias Myers (6-5, 2.81 ERA) on Wednesday night against Cardinals RHP Kyle Gibson (7-5, 4.26 ERA). Myers received a no-decision in the Brewers’ 7-1 win over the Cardinals on May 9 at Milwaukee. Gibson allowed a career-high four homers in his last start, a 9-2 loss at Cincinnati. First pitch is at 6:45.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Blue Jays pounded the Reds 10-3, the Cubs  beat the Tigers  3-1 and the Pirates blanked the Rangers 4-0. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 11 ½ games, the Cardinals by 12, the Reds by 12 ½ and the Pirates are 14 games out.

In the Midwest League Tuesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Great Lakes 4-2. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05 CDT.

The Packers returned to the practice field Tuesday. Jordan Love had one of his best practices of this year’s training camp, but guard Elgton Jenkins stole the show on the final play.

A pair of throws from Love to receiver Romeo Doubs early in team periods set the tempo for the practice. Love also spread the ball around to Doubs, Luke Musgrave, Josh Jacobs, and Tucker Kraft in the two-minute period to set up a would be game tying field goal.

The duo of Love and Doubs tried to connect in the final period on what could have been a touchdown in ‘goal to go,’ but the pass was broken up by Jaire Alexander.

Quay Walker batted away Love’s final attempt of the day, but right into the arm of Jenkins.

Now the focus shifts to Thursday’s joint practice with the Ravens, and whether or not the starters will suit up in Saturday’s preseason game.

One young guy that’s hoping to do more at practice in the coming days is linebacker Edgerrin Cooper. The rookie was limited to individual drills in his return to the field after nearly three weeks off due to a hip injury.

Brazilian pop star Anitta will perform at halftime of the first NFL game in the South American country on Sept. 6.

The NFL announced Tuesday that the 31-year-old will perform when the Green Bay Packers play the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paulo.

A fan favorite in Brazil for about a decade, Anitta released her most recent album, “Funk Generation,” in April. She is the first Brazilian artist with 35 million monthly listeners on Spotify and has the most Hot 100 charting songs of any Brazilian female artist.

In May, Anitta, released a music video depicting rituals of the Afro-Brazilian faith Candomble, sparking controversy in a country where religious intolerance is still common. Her track “Accept” has been viewed more than 3.4 million times on YouTube since its release.
