8/9/24 Missing Mail: One Man’s Story

9 August 2024 News

The news story we did Monday about mail that went missing from July 2nd through July 7th in Ripon, Berlin, Appleton, Oshkosh and other parts of the area got the attention of a Hancock man. Mike, who preferred we didn’t use his last name, says he sent six checks out in the mail on July 2nd that never made it to their destination. He is 70-years-old and retired. He was with the Milwaukee Police Department for 27 years so naturally he had concerns about those missing checks and the possibility of check washing so he asked the banks they were issued on to cancel them which comes with a hefty fee. He says they were mostly payments for credit cards, but he worries about neighbors or friends who may have missed mortgage payments, auto or home insurance payments.

He was told by the local postmaster that the Post Office doesn’t reimburse people for lost mail, but they do have forms online to search for missing mail. That doesn’t mean there aren’t those in the post office who can’t sympathize. He was told one postmaster paid out-of-pocket for a money-order for someone on oxygen.

The only official acknowledgement by the Post Office about the missing mail we received was an email from a corporate communications office in Minnesota. It read, ““We’ve been made aware of customer concerns regarding mail service in the Fox Valley area and we’re making every effort to ensure this is resolved as quickly as possible.”

Congressman Glenn Grothman’s offices may be able to help if you have an issue with missing mail. He has offices in Washington, D.C. and Fond du Lac. The phone number for his D.C. office is 202-225-2476 and for his Fond du Lac office it is 920-907-0624.
