Blake Perkins was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and the Milwaukee Brewers had 16 hits in an 8-5 victory over the slumping Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night.
Joey Ortiz went 3 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and a run to help the NL Central-leading Brewers beat the Braves for the second straight game to open the series.
Gary Sánchez was 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Jackson Chourio and Rhys Hoskins had three hits each as the Brewers had 24 baserunners.
The Braves have lost four straight and have dropped into the NL’s third wild-card slot after leading the wild-card race for much of the season.
Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta (7-6) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings. Nick Mears, Joel Payamps, Jared Koenig and Devin Williams each pitched an inning of relief.
Atlanta’s Chris Sale lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned), nine hits and two walks. He also struck out 10, giving him 85 career double-digit strikeout games to pass Steve Carlton for eighth place on the career list.
Pierce Johnson (4-4) was the loser.
Austin Riley was 2 for 3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs for the Braves. His 428-foot blast to left field scored Whit Merrifield in the fifth inning. Orlando Arcia was 2 for 4 and extended his on-base streak to a career-high 19 games. Jared Kelenic hit his 13th home run in the ninth inning.
Perkins broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth with a two-run single to center field that knocked in William Contreras and Willy Adames. Earlier in the inning, Sánchez hit a single to right field that scored Chourio and tied it. The Brewers tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth.
Braves manager Brian Snitker was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Brian Walsh. It was the first ejection of the season for any member of the Braves.
Brewers LHP Bryan Hudson (oblique) threw 24 pitches in 1 1/3 innings in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Nashville. He gave up three hits, one run and struck out two.
Brewers RHP Frankie Montas (5-8, 5.03) is set to make his second start since being acquired from Cincinnati. RHP Charlie Morton (6-6, 3.94) is scheduled to start for Atlanta in the series finale.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cubs beat the Twins 8-2, the Padres nipped the Pirates 9-8, the Marlins downed the Reds 6-4 and the Cardinals over the Rays 5-2. The Brewers remain six games ahead of the Cardinals, eight over the Pirates, nine over the Cubs and 9 ½ games ahead of the Reds.
In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost their second straight on the road to Quad Cities, 2-1. They play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders defeated the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Wednesday night at Witter Field by a final score of 7-2 to close the road slate in 2024. The Dock Spiders’ record with the win improved to 26-40 on the season and 13-20 in the second half.
The Dock Spiders return home for the final three games of the season on Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled against Wisconsin Rapids at 6:35. The Packers continue to prepare for Saturday’s preseason opener at Cleveland against the Browns.
Packers’ 1st-round rookie Jordan Morgan will miss ‘a week or so’ with a shoulder injury that he sustained on Tuesday. That will keep Morgan out of the preseason opener.
Also on Wednesday, WR Jayden Reed sitting out with a calf injury. And two other receivers went down in practice. First up was Malik Heath, who was able to return to work. But practice then ended after Christian Watson went down after leaping for a 50-50 ball that was intercepted by rookie safety Evan Williams. Watson stayed down on the ground for a few minutes before getting up and feels he will be alright. Also Wednesday, a third kicker was added to the roster once again. It’s Australian-born Alex Hale, the rookie who hails from Oklahoma State. Last year he made 27 of 34 field goal attempts and made 5 of 6 in his first Packers practice as there is once again a triumvirate competing for that one place kicker spot.

The Paris Olympics continue. The U. S. added to its medal count Wednesday and leads all countries with 94 medals, including the most gold with 27, 35 sliver and 32 bonze. China is next with 65 total medals, including 25 gold. France is third with 51 medals and Great Britain is fourth with 49.
In NFL preseason games tonight Carolina is at New England and the Lions are at the Giants.
