8/2/24 Ripon Mayor Vetoes Ripon Event Barn Rezoning Denial

Ripon Mayor Ted Grant has vetoed the Common Council’s July 22nd vote to deny a rezoning application for the Ripon Event Barn, LLC at 835 Liberty Street. In a letter to the Council Wednesday he cited a couple reasons for his veto. He said the Common Council needs to consider the “Highest and Best Use” of the property in relation to the entire city. He noted it was clear the Common Council was only considering the direct neighbors. He has asked the property owner to work with Envision Greater Fond du Lac to develop an economic impact study for the property as it relates to the entire community, including opportunities for local small businesses, non-profits, and for the enjoyment of all residents. The property owner has agreed to do so, and Envision is already working with him on the study. Mayor Grant also says the motion allows the matter to be referred to the plan commission to consider adding the condition of a 1-year review of the conditional use permit. He is asking the Common Council to reconsider approving the re-zone application for the Event Barn to a B-3 overlay on R-1 residential district and to consider the economic impact and overall benefit to the entire city.
