Jarred Kelenic broke out of a month-long slump by hitting a homer and double in the Atlanta Braves’ 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Austin Riley went 4 for 5 as the Braves won despite leaving 11 men on base.
Kelenic doubled during Atlanta’s four-run outburst in the third inning and hit a solo shot over the left-field wall in the fourth.
Before Tuesday, Kelenic had batted just .125 (11 of 88) in July with a .189 on-base percentage and .239 slugging percentage. The slump had caused his batting average to sink from .278 to .235, while his OPS plunged from .781 to .681.
Kelenic, who grew up in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, had a large group of fans cheering him on from behind the Braves’ dugout.
Braves pitcher Bryce Elder (2-4) ended a slide of his own.
Elder, who entered the night with a 6.35 ERA, carried a shutout into the seventh inning and ended up allowing a single run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
A.J. Minter, Joe Jiménez and Raisel Iglesias pitched a combined 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
Brewers pitcher Joe Ross (2-5) was making his first appearance since a lower back strain caused him to leave a May 20 start after one inning. After retiring seven of the first eight batters he faced, Ross ran into serious trouble in the third.
The Braves got four straight hits against Ross as Nacho Alvarez singled and Kelenic doubled down the right-field line before Riley and Marcell Ozuna delivered RBI singles. Eddie Rosario added a two-out, two-run single to right later in the inning to extend Atlanta’s lead to 4-0.
Kelenic then hit a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall with two outs in the fourth for his 12th homer of the season.
Ross struck out four and allowed five runs, eight hits and two walks in five innings.
The Brewers scored their lone run in the seventh. Jackson Chourio drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on Sal Frelick’s base hit and scored on a Gary Sánchez single to left.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the MRI on RHP Trevor Megill didn’t show “anything too troublesome.” Megill went on the injured list Monday due to a lower back issue.
LHP Chris Sale (13-3, 2.68 ERA) pitches for the Braves and RHP Freddy Peralta (6-6, 3.94) starts for the Brewers as this three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 1:10 from American Family Field.
In other games in the NL Central Tuesday the Reds beat the Cubs 6-3, the Cardinals over the Rangers 8-1 and the Pirates downed the Astros 6-2. The Brewers lead the Cardinals and the Pirates by six games, the Reds by nine and the Cubs are 11 games out.
In the Midwest League Tuesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at home to South Bend, 14-9. They play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10 from Fox Cities Stadium.
A pair of Packers rookies made their training camp debut on the hottest day of practice yet.
Third round running back MarShawn Lloyd missed the first week of camp due to a hip injury. Meanwhile, fifth round safety Kitan Oladapo has been sidelined since the pre-draft process after having surgery to repair a broken toe he suffered at the Scouting Combine.
Both were limited to just individual drills on their first day, and re-learned there’s a difference between being in-shape and ‘football shape.’
The Packers front office made a few roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s practice as well.
The team signing cornerbacks Don Callis and LJ Davis, and brining back long snapper Peter Bowden. Green Bay also parted ways with corerback Zyon Gilbert, fullback Henry Perason, and kicker James Turner in corresponding moves.
Turner’s departure now leaves just Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph as the only kickers on the roster heading towards Family Night.
The Packers had 2 players returning to work Tuesday, rookie RB Marshawn Lloyd and rookie S Kitan Oladapo.
The Green Bay Packers are bringing back a former Wisconsin Badgers player, plus two others.
The team announced Tuesday that it had signed long snapper Peter Bowden, cornerback Don Callis and cornerback LJ Davis.
The Packers released cornerback Zyon Gilbert, fullback Henry Pearson and kicker James Turner.
Bowden originally signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent on April 30, but was released on July 23.
Callis was a tryout player at the Packers’ rookie minicamp in May. He played in 41 total games for East Central University and Troy University.
Davis is a first-year player from Northern Arizona University. He signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent on May 15, 2023, but was released at the end of training camp. Between Northern Arizona and Southern Utah University, he appeared in 43 total games.
Tuesday at the 2024 Paris Olympics brought a return to action for a handful of Team USA’s top names.
Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey’s “redemption tour” is complete after they earned gold in the women’s gymnastics team final.
Coco Gauff fell to Donna Vekic in the women’s singles third round. She paired up with Taylor Fritz in the mixed doubles first round and won. Katie Ledecky swam her way to advancing in the women’s 1500m freestyle.
The Olympic men’s soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of an Olympics for the first time since Sydney.
Alongside Gauff and Fritz, Rafael Nadah and Carlos Alcaraz won their second men’s doubles match at Roland Garros, and Andy Murray was victorious again in doubles.
American swimmer Katie Ledecky is back in the pool on Wednesday at the Olympics and she has another chance to add more hardware to her collection.
Ledecky — who has 11 Olympic medals, including seven gold — is a favorite to win the women’s 1500m freestyle final on Wednesday. Ledecky won gold in the inaugural event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and already picked up a bronze medal in Paris.
She’s not the only American going for gold. Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh, who won gold and silver in the women’s 100 butterly earlier this week, will compete in the women’s 100 freestyle. Gymnasts Frederic Richard and Paul Juda, who earned bronze in the team final, will compete in the men’s all-around competition.
The U.S. leads the overall medal count with 26 — 4 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze. However, Japan leads the gold medal count with seven.
Santi Aldama had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Spain defeated Giannis Antekounmpo and Greec to remain in contention to advance to the knockout round.
Sergio Llull finished with 13 points. Spain improved to 1-1 in Group A with one group-stage game left to play against Canada.
Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 11 rebounds.
After losing their opening games on Saturday, Greece and Spain both came out essentially playing for their tournament lives, with the loser facing a must-win scenario on Friday — and likely lots of help — to have any chance of advancing.
That team is now Greece, which will meet Australia in its final chance to earn a victory before four teams’ medal hopes end.
