A Dane County jury awards $100,000 to the parents of a doctor who was killed in an ambulance crash in 2013. But the jury last week gave no award for pain and suffering Dr. Stanley Phillips may have experienced. The verdict won’t give Phillips’ parents more money than they have already received. Phillips and three other medical workers were heading to Appleton to bring a baby to Meriter Hospital in Madison for surgery when the ambulance crashed on Highway 26 near Rosendale. The attorney for the doctor’s parents argued in court Monday that Phillips intended to help take care of them financially in their retirement. Meriter’s insurance company agreed to pay medical bills, funeral costs and an amount for loss of companionship.

Higher fees, more electricity, rental cabins and corporate sponsorships could be in store for Wisconsin’s state parks. The 2015 state budget removed all state support from the parks and raised admission fees. Analysts say the move is projected to create an annual $1.4 million deficit in the parks account. The Department of Natural Resources has released a number of recommendations for raising money, including expanding electrical service to hundreds of campsites for recreational vehicle users, creating rental lodging and selling naming rights to park facilities. The recommendations come as Gov. Scott Walker is crafting the next state budget. Democrats say the recommendations would make the parks too expensive for families.

A German company that makes a popular liqueur is not raising a shot glass to the Milwaukee Bucks’ redesigned logo. Mast-Jägermeister has filed formal opposition with an appeal board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office about the registration of the logo. The company contends it “has established exclusive rights in the DEER HEAD Marks through use in commerce in the United States” going back to 1968. It cites numerous reasons to oppose registration for the NBA team, including the possibility that people might confuse the two companies or believe they are connected or affiliated. Both logos feature forward-looking deer with large antlers inside a circle or partial circle in about the same proportions. Neither the Bucks nor Jägermeister have made any other comments.

In a frenzy of online shopping, customers keep track of all those orders thanks to confirmation emails from retailers. However, security experts warn customers to watch out for fake shipping emails. The Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection says these scammers will use the names and logos of well-known shipping companies like FedEx. These phonies include links to “unsubscribe” or to click on an attachment for a shipping label. DO NOT CLICK. These links could install malware on your computer or attempt to get your personal information. Just delete the email. These scammers even send these emails to people who aren’t expecting packages, so no inbox is immune.
