THREE HURT IN FDL COUNTY MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
Three people were hurt when two motorcycles crashed on State Highway 45 near Gatzke Lane in Fond du Lac County’s Town of Auburn last night. The County’s Communication Center got a call about the crash at 7:45 pm. A 23-year-old Adell man was heading south on State Highway 45 near the Milwaukee River when a deer jumped out from a ditch. He laid the bike down after striking it and the motorcycle slid into a bridge guardrail before he was thrown from it. The motorcycle slid back into the lane. A 23-year-old Kewaskum man was operating the second motorcycle with a 25-year-old Oconomowoc woman as a passenger. They collided with the downed motorcycle causing them to lay down their bike before being ejected from it. The Adell man suffered serious injuries and was flown to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. The Kewaskum man and Oconomowoc woman were treated on the scene and released.
SAFE BOATING ON THE FOURTH
Green Lake County Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk says their deputies and the DNR will be out in force on Big Green and area waters during the Fourth of July weekend. He says the emphasis will be on safety and making sure that boat operators who’ve been drinking or are under the influence of drugs don’t endanger others. He says they want to ensure people are riding in the boats safely, have life vests, and their equipment is operating properly. Vande Kolk says he’s hopeful they won’t have to make any OWI arrests, but if they do need to they will take a boat operator to shore for field sobriety testing. The Sheriff’s office will also be out educating boaters on ways to stay safe while on the water.

RIPON SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT GRANT
Ripon’s new Community Development Authority has introduced a Small Business Development Grant. Qualifying entrepreneurs and small businesses could be eligible for a forgivable loan of up to $5,000 to help with start-up costs. Ripon City Administrator Adam Sonntag says there used to be small business loan programs including programs during COVID, but many of them have dried up. He says the Ripon CDA chose to start a Small Business Development Grant program as one of its first orders of business. He says the program is for businesses in the hospitality, restaurant, or tourism-related industries. Sonntag says those businesses will have to work with Ripon Main Street, Envision Greater Fond du Lac or an equivalent program on a viable business plan to qualify for the grant. More information and an application for the grant are available at the Ripon City website.

RIGGS PARK INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND NEARS COMPLETION
Fond du Lac County officials say the all-inclusive playground project at Riggs Park in Ripon is nearing completion. They are asking people to stay out of the fenced-in area and off the playground equipment until they announce that it is open. The rubberized surface being applied needs time to cure, and the playground equipment has to be inspected before the fencing is removed and the opening is announced. The official Grand Opening Celebration will be on Saturday, July 13th at 11 am. Depending on the public’s cooperation the playground may be able to open before that. The project was a collaborative effort involving Fond du Lac County, the Ripon Early Bird Kiwanis and Ripon Noon Kiwanis Clubs. The two Kiwanis clubs raised $130,000 and Fond du Lac County contributed $170,000. (Fond du Lac County photo).
FIREWORKS BURNS AND TREATMENT
The Emergency Department Director for SSM Health’s Ripon Community Hospital says if you suffer a burn handling fireworks during this Fourth of July holiday make sure you have it checked out if you think it’s serious. Dr. Jason Geiger says the most common types of burns are first-degree which is marked by redness, minor inflammation or swelling, pain, and dry, peeling skin as the burn heals. They can be taken care of by soaking the wound in cool water for five minutes or longer, taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain relief, applying lidocaine with aloe vera gel or cream to soothe the skin, and using antibiotic ointment and loose gauze to protect the affected area. Dr. Geiger says those types of burns will heal in about a week. Second-degree burns cause the skin to blister and become extremely red and sore. They also can be treated using some of the same methods applied to first-degree burns, but Dr. Geiger says if it affects a widespread area, the face or hands a visit to the ER is a good idea. There are no self-treatments for third-degree burns which are the most severe and will require hospital care.
